Another failed BIP

Having read on this forum about the issues with the notorious BIP, I had taken Aaron Calder's advice and fitted a simple LCD voltage display to the battery. When getting ready for our first trip at Easter, I noticed a reading of 16.4 volts and immediately turned off the 240v connection before damage was done. Thank you Mr Calder

We camp off grid, so luckily our weekend wasn't ruined (although storm Katie did her best) and last week the Eriba went to an auto electrician I have used before who confirmed the battery charging circuit board was u/s. This has now been disabled and Adam has recommended wiring a Ctek to the 240 unit. While there he has also altered the awning light to work without 240v, added a 12v socket to the outside access locker for an extra awning light, changed the internal DIN to cigar type by the fridge and added an external Anderson connector for my folding solar panel

I will freely admit that I don't understand all the technical stuff but I thought the awning light was only supposed to work on hook up to avoid any chance of it being left on and showing a a white light whilst the Eriba was being towed. Someone tell me please if I have misunderstood.

You are correct, Julie, they are set up to work on hook up only for that reason. I think the later models are wired as per Aaron's, Hymer having copied John England's lead, so that it works off of 240v or 12v so long as the 12v is not coming from the 13 pin connection, in which case it cuts the power. With two led lamps, it should prove useful this year having not been used last year, apart from at home!

That was my understanding too Julie but some folks who camp off grid modify things to have an awning light that works from the battery, given the amount of non daylight driving from site to site its unlikely anyone will fall foul of the law................ don't think I have ever towed in the dark.

Our first Eriba, 2001 Triton GT430 purchased from Mr & Mrs Frantone had an awning light that operated from the battery. Our other vans have not..

Current models have LED awning lights wth PIR detectors that run off the 12v system. However the 12 v circuit is automatically disabled by an isolation switch when the towing electrics are connected.
