This was originally in the links section, but nobody can reply to it there:
"I've had a quick look using the search but couldn't find the answer so hopefully someone may be able to help.
I've fitted leisure batteries/chargers to previous camper vans but I'm not quite sure about the charger in my (new to me) Puck. In previous vehicles I have used a 20A 3 stage charger permanently connected to the leisure battery and plugged into to a socket from the EHU input. This gave the leisure battery a 'proper' charge which is required to keep the battery in good condition.
My question is whether the onboard charger in the Puck giving a decent enough charge (13.3v) or should I be using something like a CTEK additionally every few weeks to keep the battery properly charged."

Having moved the above post...
I'm no expert (on anything, really), but I reckon 13.3v is a bit light. I don't think the battery would ever get a proper deep charge at that voltage, especially if the temperature was low. Most car alternators, for example, bang out something in the low 14s, and the Schaudt booster fitted to some of these vans ramps the voltage from the car up to 14.4v at the battery when towing to overcome the cable-induced voltage drop and give it a decent nudge.
If it were me I'd disconnect the van's own charger, get a CTEK MXS 5.0 and plumb it in permanently so that it charges your battery properly whenever you're on hook up.
It'll look after itself being a fit and forget kind of a thing.

The design specification for the Schauber BIP units states that the constant charge (at the end of the charging cycle) should be 13.7 (+/- 0.1) volts. I take this to mean that with a fully-charged battery, the maintenance charge should be 13.6-13.8 volts.
When my BIP output fell to 13.1V I realised that something was wrong and I updated the system as per this article which you may find useful.

Thanks guys, that is pretty much what I'm thinking.
I will have a read of that article later Aaron. Pepe, thanks for moving my post. I'm very tempted to fit an MXS 5.0 (I have used one of these in the past and found it to be very good). I only bought the Puck from AL a month ago, is this something that should be sorted by their warranty?

Although I'm positive that the problem with our BIP was there when I bought the van in May 2011, it did not become evident until our first extended holiday with it in September 2011 by which time it was out of the three month warranty.
Yours should be a straightforward claim I would think.

I have an MXS 5.0 charger and use it to charge the battery out of the 'van at home it works really well and I just fit and forget until I need the battery.
In principle there is nothing wrong with using the 230v ehu on site to power the MXS, but only for charging. It is a charger, supplying approx 5A max, not a power supply so anything drawing a substantial 12v current should be disconnected first. Perhaps the best way to use it would be to plug it in when you go out for the day and unplug upon return? That should keep it topped up.

Think I will have a chat with AL and see what they say.
Chris, yes I was thinking that something like the 20A units that I've used before may be a better option. I used to charge 2x 120ah onboard leisure batteries and run some 12v kit at the same time and it coped fine.
Cheers, David
