Gt package
Hi Folks, my apologies if this has been covered somewhere already. We are just in the process of buying a troll, my question is the gt silver model easier to scratch and more difficult to care for? Your experience and opinions will be greatly appreciated
Thanks
S
I have had both dimpled and smooth Eribas, the smooth is easier to clean and polish. At present I have a Silver Familia, no issues with scratches. It's all about what you prefer, I think the dimpled has its own merits but personally I prefer the silver smooth.

Small dings will not be as noticeable on a dimpled van, however repairing a dimpled van is not as easy as a smooth skinned van, and you cannot get a shine on a dimpled van as you can get on a smooth van.
It's all down to personal choice and aesthetics , however the premium for the GT upgrade makes the price of the van jump up.
I think the question you need to ask is what do you prefer as you will have to live with it for the next few years?

I think the dimpled finish looks fabulous in the sun, it sparkles! Also I think it may be more resistant to dings and dents.
There is no doubt that the smooth skin reveals every slight wave in the surface.

That will be the Cernay wave, don't worry there is no Bad Waldsee wave.. The smooth silver does give an optical illusion on very sunny days of the panels looking buckled, this is due to nearby objects been reflected from the mirror like surface...

The Bad Waldsee wave on this one is almost big enough to surf on. Look at the shadow line from the awning rail.
The Germins get them just as bent as the French did. The quality control's still pants, I tells yer...

Quote: Stephen wrote in post #3Dark metallic colours are the worst for showing every single scratch, swirl and dent. Dark metallic cars look ace when the paintwork is immaculate, but it's a real bugger to keep them that way. The lighter the colour the less noticeable the imperfections are, whether those imperfections are the result of the quality control geezer at the factory having a toffee paper stuck on his specs or the passage of time.
Thanks, do you think that the silver one could mark easier than the dimpled type?
White is the best colour for not showing marks, but doesn't look as spiffy as silver. It depends what you want. If you want to minimise the work required to keep it looking clean I reckon I'd go for smooth white; if you want to minimise the effect of the inevitable scars it's bound to pick up I'd go for dimpled white.
Silver looks grand, but it will take more elbow grease to keep it smart, and there's no doubt that scratches will be more noticeable as will any subsequent touch-up attempts.
If I was ordering a brand new silver one I'd be having a very close look along its flanks in bright sunlight before accepting it. Some of them do come out pretty wavy, and the darker the colour the more noticeable it is.
John's right - you will see more reflections in a darker colour, and if wonky reflections bother you it'll drive you nuts. I couldn't get on with towing a mobile hall of mirrors, but then that's me. It's not the same kind of thing as an Airstream - they're supposed to be like that.
There is one other thing to bear in mind. The paintwork on these vans is very thin - much thinner than that on a car, and there's no clearcoat to protect whatever colour it is. The paint is printed on to the aluminium sheet before it's attached to the frame rather than the whole thing being sprayed like a car, so if there were more coats of paint not only would it be a lot heavier, the sheet would begin to lose the flexibility it needs to go round the curves.
All things considered, a grey rubber one would probably be your best bet

I am on site at the moment at Barnard Castle CC getting some funny looks whilst I am stroking my van looking for imperfections, I willl conceed that where the panel is fixed to the top of the frame there is a slight wave, however the main flank of panels on both my German vans I have owned have been as straight as a die. But at least it's nice to know that Hymer have kept some of the traditions alive...

John, you mustn't stroke your van. It gives other people ideas.
We had to put a "do not" sticker on ours because so many Eriba lovers were touching it, the paint was being rubbed off.

We bought it from the VW Museum and re-modeled it to suit the Eriba.

But we like our Cernay wave - it adds character - anyway we'd rather have a little Cernay wave on the exterior that suffer having hinges break on the interior, or doors dropping off or any of the other QC complaints that seem to be popping up on German made vans - where are they getting the workforce from ?
