Looking to change the car, the 1.6 diesel skoda octavia seems ok for our Eriba 320, any experiences out there or advice welcome on engine size

Not much from me except the 2L will eat it. We have a 2L Touran (140bhp) and it eats the Troll.

We've also towed it with a 1.6L (90bhp) Focus Estate and it was adequate. (our Troll is a 1000kg gross weight).

I've read that the 1.6L 110bhp is an OK car.

If you're towing anything bigger than a galvanised box full of grass clippings, I'd always go for the car with the biggest engine you can afford to buy and afford to run.

Much better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

We had a 1.6L Octavia for a couple of years and found it to be a stunning car. MPG solo was always 60-65, and we got 35-38MPG with the 1200kg Triton we had at the time. We were always a bit worried that we would eventually damage the small engine, but had no problems during 40000 miles.

When we bought the 1300kg Troll, we realised that we would then be towing at over 100% with the Octavia, so swapped to a 2.0 Yeti to get the higher kerbweight. We sacrificed 10mpg on solo driving, but while towing it appeared to still be the same 35-38mpg.

The Yeti is very sure-footed as a towcar, and our latest 2.0 150bhp 4x4 version is an absolute delight to drive.

I tow my 1000kg troll with a 2L Superb DTI, did 2K miles over three weeks earlier this month in France. I was also getting about 38 mpg.Sailed up the hills with plenty to spare, I agree with Pepe, better to have it when you need it.

I rate my Skoda as the best car I have ever owned, name says it all.

2L over 1.6L every time. I too have a new Superb and towed my Triton from Scotland to Devon and back last month. Effortless, 40mpg. Used to have a Freelander. Skoda every bit as good and a lot more comfortable.

Vote for the opposing camp here.
We have a 1.6 diesel Honda CRV with the new(ish) 1.6 iDTEC engine. Ours tows the Triton fine, no problems to report and the MPG is pretty good too.

Technology has moved on with engines, you need to look at the torque output. I use a 1.5 DCI for my Familia 320 and this engine has 240Nm of torque. It pulls the Familia with ease.

Personalty I would go for the 2L engine as if you want to change the van out in the future for a Triton or Troll you will have enough power without having to change your car again.

When I go on holiday I like to pop my top!
