Amps refers to the maximum output or 'flow' rate of the charger - 120 AH (amp/hour) refers to the amount of electricity or amps that the battery is capable of storing.

It's like turning on a tap to fill a container - the lower the flow the longer it will take to fill to its capacity, but it'll get there in the end !

So it should charge a healthy battery in,for example, about double the time that a 14 amp charger would take. Fast or very high amperage chargers are less kind to batteries than lower amp 'trickle chargers' !

Hope this helps - Please anyone more knowledgeable than me correct me :)

Good reply, Martin.

I'm no expert on matters electrical (I was hanging back expecting Pete to chip in) but modern 'smart' chargers like the Ctec range vary the charge rate according to battery condition so as to avoid damage. This link explains what they do: 3-stage battery chargers

The one that I installed in our Triton (see here) is rated at 18 Amp and has an automatic, built-in cooling fan to protect the circuitry in case of overheating although I've never yet heard it running.
