Rare for there to be a ferry from Plymouth to St Malo - usually only at Christmas when they stop some boats. If you get the ferry to Roscoff, you'll find the roads are excellent. We live half way between Roscoff and St Malo so if I can be of any help.......

I think that because Brittany ferries are so expensive (no competition!) you need to decide if you'd rather spend the money on the ferry and arrive closer to your final destination, or drive further and have a cheap ferry. If you live in the Sount West, then Portsmouth is a long way to drive. Our daughter lives near Porthleven so we have no option but to use Plymouth/Roscoff.

Will be looking at that one Highmiler when we firm up our dates. That bit of France suits us best as we aim to do the Somme in some detail.

Quote: hampshireman wrote in post #9Can I recommend the ACSI site at Albert, Derek, as a good central point for a tour? We were there some years ago and 'did' the Somme memorials and battlefields from there. We tried a few campsites in the area and were getting desperate before we found this one. A mate went there last year on our recommendation and was really pleased with the location.

If you call at the Office de Tourisme, you can pick up a free guide to the 'Route des Coquelicos' (Poppy Route) which takes you on a circular tour of all the important places and is waymarked with poppy signs. Don't miss the Lochnagar Crater, Newfoundland Memorial, Thiepval and the cemeteries. We've been back a number of times and always find something new that is of interest.
The site is called 'Le Vélodrome' and is accessed from the centre of Albert down the street immediately to the right of the Basilica with the famous Virgin of Albert on its tower. There is a terrific museum under the Basilica.

Thanks Brian, invaluable I am sure - made a copy of it. We watched a facinating and rivetting prog on telly last night and it stirred me on. I am really looking forward to doing the trip for Carole especially. Then she said maybe we should leave it it till next year because of the Calais situation.
My thoughts were that it surely can't carry on till then, of course you never know over there, but I can't imagine it.
Anyway there is no way we are thinking of booking yet and there are a few things in Sept/Oct we have in diaries.

> The problems only seem to be at Dover, though. I suppose it's the busiest.
By miles, 14 million + passengers annually, Portsmouth by comparison only shifts about 2.5 million. Only Hollyhead gets in the millions everywhere else is mid hundreds of thousands.
Dover accounts for 61% for all passenger ferry traffic in the UK
