Camping Cheques - gold silver cards

Can anyone advise about the use of Camping Cheques for staying in France ? Not used them so don't know if any pros or cons. It would seem that at one site in France we have looked at the cost per night for 2 persons would be 24.80 euros but 16.00 euros paying by Camping Cheque
There is also a gold and silver card option available

If you are going out of the main season, Mike, an ACSI card might be a better idea.

I reckon that we recover the membership cost after three nights away.

We have used the ACSI card before and we also saved a good penny as we stayed at sites over a 2 week period who all were members however the site we are looking does not take them only the cheques.

We acquired some Camping Cheques from another Eriba owner who couldn't use them. I was very unsure about them but we just presented them at reception. One Cheque equalled one nights pitch, just had to fill in your name and address, there was a space for some sort of membership number but no-one asked for it. We found the sites online, funnily enough all 3 that we used were also ACSI sites. As we had bought the Cheques secondhand, so to speak, we got 7 nights for just over £6 a night, bargain. There don't seem to be as many sites, certainly not in Switzerland, but they were all ok. The scheme seems to work very well, if I was offered the Cheques again or got them with a ferry offer, which seems to happen, I wouldn't hesitate.

For less expensive sites here, look for the municipal campsites. They're often really well located, much cheaper, the loos are often newer and better cleaned compared to many private sites. An example : a caravan and 2 adults with elec. is often around 27E per night at this time of year- last week we paid 17E in a municipal site right on a beach.

Hi Islay. An interesting point.

Do you know if there's an on-line directory of French Municipal Campsites or even perhaps, a purchasable hand book? We know the French are good at things like that.

The Michelin Camping Guide is very comprehensive for Municipal sites.
