More the 'law' requires them if your tow vehicle is not as wide as the caravan (or trailer) - the means the actual vehicle at the rear not the width of your door mirrors , and you are expected to have a wide rear view of the 'van' and a prescribed area each side to the rear ! Frankly, I find them more hassle than they're worth - but I only tow a Puck L, even then 'technically' required, so fitted to avoid the problem from some over zealous cop with nothing better to do !

Agreed, if the van is wider than the towing vehicle they are a legal requirement, even if the towing vehicle is wider than the van then you still have to justify their absence when pulled over................... easier to just fit a pair ............ and you do see more with them.
(I always thought a yeti was a big furry creature from mythology?)
