Dorset, Devon, winding narrow lanes, up hill, down dale..............as Tigger would say - this is what automatics like best!!!
Well, not in the same words perhaps, but the big thing about an auto is that it does the changing so you don't have to.
The Cmax, as I recall, uses a variable speed system - modern descendent of the old variomatic system. I think it has 7 pre-selected ratios you can use.
My Kia - old TC type - has a manual sequential shifter so that you can take control if you want - good for engaging engine braking on long hill.

Go back to a manual? If your maker wanted you to drive a car with 3 pedals you'd have been given 3 feet!

So too mine and what I like about it is that when climbing a hill/ramp such as a ferry and the auto revs are such that you're in-between gears, then this ability to shift into manual and hold a gear is worth it's weight in gold. I don't use the system for engine braking as such because setting cruise control to a lower required speed does the job automatically. In fact the ability for cruise control to maintain the set speed whether travelling up or downhill is one of my favourite aspects of this current car - so much better than a previous VW Touran which actually used to speed up when going downhill to the extent that constant braking was required.

I was looking at the atest blurb from a few of the larger German makers, and each of them now has GPS "linked" to the autobox to "adopt" the correct gear for the current driving conditions! 😨
