Stopovers

I'm going to attempt a longer journey with our Triton next week. We're travelling from the South Coast to North Norfolk, by way of the M23, M25 and M11. The only service station I know in the area is the one by Stansted, and that has had rubbish reviews from caravanners in the recent past. Can anyone from East Anglia (Hob, are you reading this?) recommend a decent place to pull in for an hour or so to rest my aching back on the way?

We've used Cambridge services regularly on our way up from Dover to home. The caravan spaces are to one side and shouldn't be used by anyone else, cars and HGV areas clearly marked, but you do get the odd interloper. The facilities aren't bad but we mainly put steadies down, put kettle on and open the fridge for something to eat, thereby depriving the services of any of our dosh.
Easy access off the A14 unlike some services where you seem to travel miles to get to them.

As a local, I should point out that the services on the A14 just north of Cambridge are probably past the point you will turn off on your route to Norfolk. You can swing back south to the bit of the A14 that then traverses the northern edge of Cambridge which will take you to the A10 or A11 depending on what exactly your chosen route is..

Apart from that, services are a bit of a rarity around here, something I've always found a bit shocking considering the amount of traffic that is heading to and from the East coast ports etc

If no service area's as such you can always find a lay-by with enough room and take some hot water in a flask to make tea and bring sandwiches ......... the Triton should have a loo on board if needed.

I have often stopped in a lay-by for breaks \ stretch my legs tea and a sandwich I always carry a small single burner camping stove a whistling kettle and some water with me.

Even found a layby with a burger van in it once and had tea and a burger while wandering up and down by the van getting my body to become accustomed to not being stuck in a car seat.

Hob may confirm that there is a nice stopover picnic area in Thetford forest on the road between Thetford and Mundford on the A134. No services but easy access for the Eriba. Is it Red Stag Nev?

The Thetford are was quiet good. I have done it and I used last services on M4 the ones before Cohesively, and then the Thetford so making two stops. On another Journey withoyt the caravan I used Standstead and it was dismal and a bit chambolic.

Thanks everyone. It's as I feared, there really isn't anything on our route that's meant for caravans. Cabbie's right, in that Cambridge is a bit off route. It's going to be a long day anyway, and I don't really want to make it any longer than I need to if I can help it. But thanks to those who suggested the A14 services.

I'll probably try to stop in a layby as soon as poss after the M11 stops being a motorway. And then I'll find Tony's and Nev's Stag picnic area and hope there's room for the Triton. Should be – after all, they're not the longest of caravans.

Thanks again ...

Martyn

Starting from near Brighton, and ending up (hopefully) at West Runton. Not too great a journey as journeys go, but with a spinal injury (read: bad back) driving is painful at the best of times.

Having just looked at your likely route, you'll probably leave the M11 and take the A11 towards Newmarket etc. At the A1307 junction (called Four Wentways), south of Cambridge, signposted Great Abington, there's a filling station, Travelodge and Little Chef (its a little fiddly, you have to head for Gt Abington and then immediately turn right into this complex - it will be clear when you are there). I think that might be your best bet..

As you get to to it, there is a large 'roundabout' Trucks etc pull onto the verge round this - you may have to do the same. But don't worry, it's only a 'feature' not a conventional roundabout. It will all become clear when you get there...

I often find that the "caravan" parking area's on motorway services are full of white van men, or other interlopers, so now at services especially at this time of year I use the truck parking, if I'm towing, don't be intimidated by the trucks, they won't mind you being there.
Make sure you are at the front of the grid and you will have no problems.
Or If your not in a mad rush to get there exit the M25 at the A12, follow this to Chelmsford and then take the 131 via Braintree , Sudbury and Bury St Ed, eventually you will join the A134 and meet your other route at Thetford. There are lots of lay-bys on this route,on the A131 they have parking areas and a loo , and burger vans , or if you don't stop there, there are lots of other lay-bys on this 2ndry route. It's a good road and will not waste much time , I always think A routes are more interesting than motorways.
