Mr Falklands' electrical/fridge questions - can you help?

I'm re-posting a blog entry made by falklands a little while ago:

'Hi, we are new to the world of caravanning, we brought our Eriba Familia a few weeks ago, and have been on one trip to Wales, we don't seem to be able to master the fuses, when hooking up to mains electricity, are they up or down, and the fridge does not get cold when charging battery at home prior to trip out, could anyone please tell us newbies where we are going wrong.
Many thanks'

It's not as straightforward to respond to a blog post as it is to a post in a thread, so hopefully someone can lend a hand here.

Cheers

Pete

Fuse box switches should always be in the up position, this is in case while you are working on the fuse box the switches can't get knocked on by mistake. This may also cure your fridge problem if you have had your switches down. Check that the green light on the fridge has come on.

the fridge does not get cold when charging battery at home prior to trip

The green switch works when on mains, and should light up when on, the red switch is for 12 volt and should only be used or work when towing it is not meant to run the fridge from the battery.
it may take some time for the fridge to get cold.

I have never checked fuses. When at home preparing for a trip I hook up to the house power, put the fridge on and when leaving, fill it up with food, ice (pre iced in the house freezer) and all seems fine.
We have had one minor problem this week, Carole had the fridge switched to battery for many hours after arriving and on EHU and the fridge had defrosted,
