Carole has a tough job in getting the movers on and I usually have to finish the job with the wheel brace. Then she takes them off while parked worrying that they will affect the tyres. I don't believe so. What do you do?

Derek if you leave them on while parked your inviting a problem, it's a bit like leaving your van in one position for a long time, the tyres can weaken and deteriorate with time, just my thoughts! No doubt someone else will be along to confirm / deny

I don't think the rollers would do the tyres any harm in the short term, but if I've got the choice of leaving components at rest or under load, I'd leave them at rest every time.

Things last longer that way.

And there's one other thing. If you leave them on, you increase the chances of forgetting to disengage them before driving off. If you do that, you'll either plough two nice furrows in the grass or possibly damage the motors.

I realise it's a pain, but I think I'd wind them off if I were you.

Thanks Gray and Pete. They are never on for weeks on end, a few days maybe while in site.
I will have to invest in a proper power tool to put them on as the winding is too tough for Carole to manage.

We wind ours off but they are motor driven, I worry that if the motor packs up I can't move the van. So far they've always worked but I prefer to be safe.

It might be cheaper to send her down the local gym to beef up them biceps

As previously mentioned a power tool with sufficient torque to engage the motors will probably have too much torque for Carole's wrists. A ratchet driver with the correct socket may be a better bet!

Derek, if you have the Reich Comfort or Economy you may be able to retro-fit the Motor Drive auto engagement system.

Reich have discontinued production of the Comfort and may discontinue the Economy in the next year or two so I'm not too sure what the situation is with the Motor Drive at the moment.

The last one I fitted was a couple of years ago and cost about £200.

Thanks John. Although it's primarily madam's problem she also controls the exchequer and that is outside her fiscal plans. Whatever that means.

Try oiling all the moving parts of the mechanism. Ours was really hard to get a good engagement until I oiled every pivot point. It's now easy to wind it fully on.

I sprayed ours with white grease from an aerosol on Pete's recommendation and it made it much easier to engage and quieter to operate.

Also, there's no need to fully wind back the rollers when on-site; just slacken it off a bit to reduce the pressure on the tyre tread.
