Is it possible to change a gas heater to electric?

Hi,
During the annual service we were told that our gas truma heater thermostat is broken and that it will cost a few hundred to fix. Any idea on if we can actually replace the whole thing with a heater with an electric option?
Thanks

I reckon you should get a second opinion. A thermostat replacement isn't a huge job (I would have thought).

The previous owner had taken out the gas heater so we replaced it with a 30Euro oil filled electric heater which I feel happier with anyway than gas heating.

The gas thermostat (the copper-coloured long bulb at the base if the heater) is an integral part of the gas valve/control unit.
The whole assembly costs about £90, add to this a couple of hours labour between £60 and £80, and a new flue seal at £5, and the complete job should come to around £170.

Gas thermostats rarely fail though, but these heaters do suffer from rusty burners which produce a low, yellow- coloured flame.

What are the fault symptoms on your heater?

Thanks for your reply.
It only works on the top setting which blasts the van. They said it will cost a fair bit due to labour costs. Apparently they need to take the whole thing out to get to the bit that needs repairing.

Thanks for your reply.
So was there just a space left where the old one was removed? We have been using a small oil heater but it seems like a waste of space with the broken gas heater. Interesting idea!

I have also hear of another person removing the heater and converting it to a cupboard, with matching door to the wood. You could then use it to store an electric one. I have one that fits under the seats as it is a small Dimplex oil free, more economical, faster to heat and lighter in weight.

The space left is the perfect size for a folding crate that contains all the shoes. I don't know why, but we seem to need a LOT of shoes LOL
