I'm using my smartphone now to keep in touch with the forum while in France and I recently downloaded the Metro France app so I can keep up with the weather forecasts. I have just checked the balance on my pre-paid Euro card and can, if I wish, do banking with it and read the UK and world news via the BBC app.

This is all very well if I have access to decent WiFi 'cos this Tesco mobile (O2) has bloody appalling signal coverage both in the UK and here. At home I have no service but 100yds in any direction outside I get 4G. I haven't had a useable signal in France since Pas de Calais. Mrs C's stupid phone which is on Orange continues to work more or less wherever we go.

It ain't fair.

Strange one Aaron, when abroad the phone should go into roaming mode (if it is switched on) and it will use the closest mobile site regardless of the provider. Some phones are known to have a poorer internal antenna and its not unusual to have to different phones using the same service provider to have different coverage at the same location.

Smartphones are data hungry as they are constantly updating the apps in the background and they will sometimes ignore a close 2G site with good coverage in preference for a poor 3G/4G site much further away. Some phones will let you switch the 3G/WDMA off to enable the 2G/GPRS to be used.

I Suppose really I should not blame the technology after all it is only an inert lump of metal and plastic.

Probably my dislike of them is more disappointment in the fact that after millions of years of evolution we can produce something as advanced as that and a huge lump of humanity can find nothing more interesting to do with this wonder of the modern age than to take a picture of their badly cooked meal that they are about to eat ............. then proceed to shove it on twitter or facebook in the vain hope that someone among the hoard of other users might be interested, and the sad part is some of them probably will be.
I often see them wandering round the supermarket muttering things like "skimmed or semi skimmed dear?" or "they haven't got that butter dear will brand xxxx do?" (sometimes not even in English)

I resist the temptation to run them over when they blindly wander out into the road peering at their gadget reading the latest tweets (mainly because I don't want to damage the car)

I try hard to ignore them when they are standing next to me chattering away ............. but not to me.

So its probably not phones I don't like it's people

Are you sure about that? It has always been my understanding, and personal experience bears this out, that the phone will initially lock on to a partner network. In the case of Vodafone (Germany) that I am on my phone will automatically lock on to Vodafone networks in all the European countries that we visit.
That said, it was the case with much older phones that we used to possess that although the phone locked on to the partner network as mentioned above there was a menu which allowed me to change to an alternative network if I so wished i.e. better coverage in a particular location. This menu no longer appears in the Android Smartphones that both I and the OH now possess.

Roaming ensures that a traveling wireless device (typically a cell phone) is kept connected to a network without breaking the connection. In wireless telecommunications, Traditional Roaming is a general term referring to the ability for a cellular customer to automatically make and receive voice calls, send and receive data, or access other services, including home data services, when travelling outside the geographical coverage area of the home network, by means of using a visited network. For example; should a subscriber travel beyond their cell phone company's transmitter range, their cell phone would automatically hop onto another phone company's service, if available.

And last night we walked back across a very dark camp site using the torch on the Flashlight app on my phone. Oh, and I always have a pretty good camera in my pocket in case of emergency.

Something seems to have gone tits-up with O2 recently as I don't recall having had these problems before.

What usually happens is that when the shuttle is approaching the terminal in France, I receive a text from Bouyguestelecom welcoming me to their network. I have roaming switched off (I'm a tight Yorkshireman who doesn't like financial shocks) and I wait until I have WiFi access before using the Internet.

This time I did get a message on the train but I didn't take much notice. It told me the cost for making and receiving calls and texts and I thought no more of it.

I would suspect that there was a problem with my phone (a Motorola Moto3) were it not for the fact that my son also cannot get a signal at our house on his Tesco Moto2 that I handed down to him and always worked fine until not so long ago.

Here at Florac, I have 'Emergency calls only' on my display and no signal strength bars showing. Mrs C's phone shows a full strength signal on Orange.

I did complain to Tesco about the poor signal at home but they said they had tested it and found it to be working normally.

Not for me it aint!

I just love the apps. So many good ones and all of them free.
Set the TV aerial up in a jiffy in the correct direction and polaristaion, dead easy. Find the nearest Tesco extra for fuel, find a Wetherspoons pub for a cheap lunch. Find my way out of a dark forest, identify that butterfly or bird song.
Oh, and I have a really clever one, press a few numbers and I can talk to somebody remotely, amazing :)

I embrace it!😲😨 I find it hard to believe that in my lifetime we have gone from a radio which had to be fitted in a sideboard! I listened to Radio Luxembourg on a crystal set! And now I can speak to others on the far side of the planet, carry around some 35000 "tunes", check my heart rate! Count how many bubbles are contained in the average under water frat! You get my drift I'm sure, AMAZING

Received this from my Brother today.

Dear all

You may be aware I lost my phone recently – claims that it was sighted in a glass case at the Science Museum were, I felt, a tad unnecessary.

Anyway kindly text me so I can save your number etc

Now if he had an android phone linked to a google account the contacts would port over to his new phone automatically and would never be lost..

Rest assured he ain't gonna lose all his numbers again, not least after all the stick his kids (and his brother ) have given him.

To me, this facility alone is worth the £80 you need for a smart phone.

I spent ages in live chat with a Tesco rep in India re my connection problems today. It was largely a waste of time but in the end I did a manual scan of available networks - should be automatic - and connected to Orange and now have sufficient signal strength to allow calls and texts.

But why should I have had to sort this out manually?

Relieved but not impressed.
