New Formica for Table

Hi Folks I have spent a few days with help from Lynnsey and Harrison tidying up some of my interior wish list. The first on the list was to resurface the tired fake wood formica on the table and back shelf. I have resurfaced it in Orange to match the pop top canvas. I may have got a bit carried away and also done the interior of the door and the extension shelf on the kitchen worktop. I have found a great supplier of Laminate near me in Neasden. It was a fraction of the cost of Formica and they have a huge supply of colours and wood finishes. They are called Brent Plastics (easy to find on Google).

Next job is renewing the Canvas and a total respray of the outside.

Regards

Mark

Hi both. Looks like a great job. How did you cut it and remove the razor sharp edges? Also was it pre-glued or did you have to use special glue. I remember doing a kitchen in the 60's and it was a nightmare to cut, glue and make the edges safe on the laminate I used.

Now that you've started this thread and posted pics I'll move the pics you added to the gallery earlier to the improvements album.

That was me.

I'm just in the process of sending Mark a PM telling him wot I done, 'cos I seem to have lost the bit of copy that went with his original upload.

Christ on a bike. I'll get the hang of this photo gallery if it's the last thing I do...

Looks a really Pukka job Mark, and the orange colour seems to go very nicely.

Cutting it was the hardest thing to work out. On small sections you can use a stanley knife to score it and then snap it. but that can go wrong. The sheet you get it on is 10ft by 4ft. I clamped it between two pieces of timber and used a laminate trimmer bit on a router to cut it to roughly 20mm more than the size I needed. Then I used contact adhesive on the table and on the back of the laminate. Once it is dry I used the router to trim the edge flush with the original formica and used a file to take the sharpness off the edge. Because there is a timber profile around the table it means you can't use a laminate bit. But if you put the guide rail on the router you can line up a straight cutter, set the depth and use the bottom of the table as the guide.
