Audi DKW

After my afternoon nap today I watched the Antiques Road Trip (BBC 1 4:30pm) and saw the most amazing car being driven by this week's experts, an Audi DKW.

Audi DKW

It would appear that Audi was once Auto Union ( I didn't know that ) which is a racing car name that I remember from the 50's ie.unless Pepe Le Pew and Mr__Underhill argue differently

Yes indeed - Audi/Horch/DKW/Wanderer the original 4 constituent companies that became "Audi" - hence the 4 rings of the Audi trade mark !

I didn't see the TV programme - but expect the car was the 2 stroke engined DKW - super looking car :)

The engine was to become the basis/copy ! used by Saab for their early 2 stroke vehicles, I believe.

August Horch started two of the companies that ended up under the Auto Union umbrella. After a fall out at the Horch company, he left and started a new company. Unable to use his name, which means to hear in German, he used the Latin version, Audi.

Like most, I always say ow-dy rather than or-dy as in audio as perhaps it should be.

Well my German wife pronounces it ow-dy so I guess that most of you are correct then. Neither she, or I after 15 years of living here, have ever heard it pronounced or-day. Oh well, perhaps way up in the northern half they do but as the cars are produced in the south which is where we are, we'll continue to pronounce it ow-dy.

Yay! Finally, a return on an investment made umpteen years ago!

I did Latin to O Level (it was a weird elective choice between biology and Latin, and I wasn't too keen on dissecting dead frogs), and other than being able to translate that pig-Latin nil carborundum bastardae it hasn't really been of too much use.

Until now!

The Latin verb 'to hear' is audire (ow-dee-ray), and audi is the singular imperative form of it. As far as I remember, all the conjugations of audire - including audi - are pronounced with an 'ow'.

As is audio.

Pronouncing it ordi-o is an English language thing.

I only got a grade four, mind you.
