Taxed heavily? Assuming that you have elected to offset all of your annual tax allowance against your forces pension then you should be taxed at Basic Rate on your other income, unless of course you have two pensions paying out a fortune every month. I had 47 years of contributions but receive the old pension rate so as you're ex-Army (guess) you will understand when I tell you to go away in short, sharp, jerky movements!
