How critical is balancing the weight on each side of the van?

I fully understand the need to correctly load the van front to back but what are the effects/dangers of having more load on one side?
I ask as I'm looking at fitting a second leisure battery just behind the first to give me more 'off grid' time. As my 2005 Puck left the factory with everything fitted down the near side (fridge, hob, electrics, battery and sink/water) I'm thinking I will probably be fine adding the second battery.
Any heavy items I carry are put in the offside underseat space to at least offer the best balance.

It would be more important how a heavy battery would affect your total payload.

Payload = max axle running weight - van weight,

the difference is how much you can carry in the van while towing and includes extra's like batteries and all your personal stuff.

Thanks for the reply. I'm generally a solo camper who likes to travel light so no problems with total payload. I have got a Reich caravan scale, I can't remember the exact figures I took in the summer fully loaded but I had plenty of spare capacity.
