Winter and the handbrake

Hi, I've just read my December edition of the Caravan Club magazine and in the article about preparing your caravan for winter inactivity it suggests (if you are parked on level ground) that you release the handbrake. I'm fairly new to caravans, only had my Eriba for a year but last winter I didn't do this and everything was fine, no issues with the brakes.

Any advice?

Peter

Firstly, I'm amazed that anyone actually reads the CC Magazine. Mine is skimmed and then immediately put in the recycling.

Here's a comment I put in a thread a few days ago:

"Just to echo what Derek, said, I think it's good policy not to park the caravan (or car for that matter) for any long period of inactivity with the handbrake engaged as brake shoes and pads can stick to the drums/discs and be a pig to release. Clutch plates are also prone to this."

Last year you were lucky as if the brake shoes had seized to the drums, you would certainly have known about it when you tried to move the van.

When I started caravanning in 1981 I suffered seized brakes due to leaving the handbrake on for no more than a month. Costly mistake. The dealer who carried out the repars advised me and apparently all his customers to NEVER use the handbrake. Always use chocks if necessary. To date I have followed this advice to the letter and never had a problem.

Which of course beggars the question of should one set the handbrake when set up for a couple of weeks at a campground or would chocking of the wheels and of course having the steadies down negate this necessity?

It has worked like that for me for over 30 years.
