230/240 volts Electric Hook up tripping

Just got home from a few days away at the Caravan Club Chapel Lane site. This morning Nia an I took the dogs for a walk and left just the radio connected to the mains. When we returned after about 30 minutes I noticed the radio was running on batteries and not mains. I checked the other mains sockets and all were dead. Checked the BIP and it had tripped.
I tried resetting it but it tripped instantly. Tried the ehu cable on another bollard connection but same thing happened.

When I arrived home I connected the ehu up and this time it tripped the house circuit.

I'm hoping the issue is a short in the cable and I'll buy a 10m one tomorrow just to check.

Anyone have any suggestions on what else I should try?

My AL warranty runs out in a few days so I'll obviously email them just in case it's a serious problem.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Forgot to add that we have a 2010 Troll 540.

Kevin

Try opening the hookup lead plugs both ends and seeing if all the wires are tight in the pins and nothing touching anything else, if you have a multi meter test for continuity across each pair of pins both ends for internal damage, also inspect the insulation the whole length for damage.

Is it tripping yet there's nothing plugged into the sockets? An appliance, although plugged in, doesn't necessarily have to be switched on to trip the electrics if it's faulty.

Yes. It's tripping with no appliances plugged in. I'm hoping it's the cable, either water ingress or loose connection causing a short.

I was going to buy a 10m ehu anyway as the Troll only lives about 5 meters from the house and I'm fed up unwinding the whole 25m cable the night before we go away. Only problem is that the two branches of the local hardware store where I'd normally purchase have cleared the camping and caravanning gear and replaced them with Christmas tat. So I may have to look further afield.

The fridge was also running on hook up, so I suppose it could be the cause of the problem.

You can test for that by turning off the fridge and plugging it in again then try re-setting the trip.

Also - when mains connected to the 'van, the Mains to 12 volt (and battery charging, if you have one) will automatically be connected, so if all other causes have been dismissed, this could be the problem ?

Thanks all for the suggestions. I hadn't initially thought of the fridge or the mains to 12v and battery charger. Thankfully, Nia has managed to buy a 10m hook up cable so I can at least start eliminating the various areas.

Unfortunately had the same problem even with new hook up cable. Switching the fridge off made no difference either. I'm not going to mess about with the system any more, time to call in the professionals.
Fortunately we're not booked to go away next till April. Plenty of time to get it sorted. Hopefully!

Isolated the problem to the hot water heater. Switched that off and all was ok. Now just need to arrange to have it fixed.

Glad you found the fault. There's nothing worse than an undiagnosed problem in any piece of kit. Bit like a modern car. the mechanics just keep fitting new bits at your expense until the fault goes away.
Hopefully a new heating element will cure your problem although it might be worth just checking the wiring to the element, or the thermostat if there is one, before buying the element. Do the cheap and easy stuff first :)
