Two posts in two days, its beginning to sound a bit like my winter lifestyle
Ok something to at least read, 6 years ago I bought a new vac cleaner, over time its got worse until the point where it overheated enough to cut out while in use.
So I thought time to buy a new one, I even looked at websites like electrical retailers and fleabay for one to suit my needs ............... then I got to wondering do I really need to throw this piece of kit away??
Its a good make cost £100.00 at the time so I typed the make into a search engine and found a youtube vid about cleaning and yearly changing of the filters.
No-one said anything about changing filters once a year? when I bought it!!!
So back to ebay and a new set of filters are a tenner, it may not work but its worth a try
We live in a throw-away society, and I don't like waste, its not about the money its about throwing away something that may give many more years of useful life for the sake of a pair of filters.
I chose "click and collect" from a store 20 miles away, I don't drive much at this time of year and need to take the car for a run occasionally to stop all those on-board clocks and computers from running my battery down ...............so two birds with one hoover so to speak.
Waiting for my "click and collect" number to come up to test my theory that a six year old vac is not scrap and reviving is better than recycling.

Ok while I'm rambling where does the future lie?
My local co-op used to have a haberdashery department with clothing curtains home furnishings etc
Now all gone, recently they rented out over 1\2 the shop to a place called the factory shop or toffs
also a travel agents a subway and a franchise cafe. ............... what is left is a supermarket with less choice than before and a minor electrical department
I live on the outskirts of the town and often see major supermarket delivery vans down my road with deliveries taking money from the local high street.
So is the future dead for small town centres? with thousands of delivery vans polluting the world from central hubs?
If so how will the government reconcile its pollution targets?
I always try to shop local but its getting harder

Hi Hob,
My Aunt bought us a hoover (Hoover not vacuum cleaner) for a wedding present back in 1979. It's been serviced regularly (every 3 years), has dealt with the fallout from 4 children, 3 dogs, and numerous house moves over the years and is still going strong. My brother mocked me for clinging to my trusty vac when in 1994 he got married and got a bagless (mentioning no names) vacuum and said it was the bees knees - he has had to replace it 5 times since then - he's not laughing now. The old Hoover Seniors are still around on fleabay and the like and can be picked up for a few quid - parts are available

I have a not-very-expensive LG which all comes apart for washing and brushing down so it's like a new hoover every time.
It's quiet coz we're all getting ready for Christmas

When our Dyson packed in recently I diagnosed worn carbon brushes in the motor.
Replacement brushes on eBay were about £9 but a complete new motor including brushes was £15!
Detailed fitting instructions were available courtesy of YouTube and apart from a bit of wrestling with plastic bits that clip together, the job was straightforward. I fitted new filters and gave it a thorough internal cleaning while it was stripped.
Result, one Dyson as good as new for about £20. Smug git factor 'high'.

Denise,
you have beaten me. Around 1983/4 we bought a Henry. It is totally original apart from replacing the long thin crevice tool tube, and still going strong.
I was so impressed with it that soon after I bought a metal bodied Numatic for use in the workshop. This has an auto switching head to plug power tools in. I also went bagless and bough the fine hospital grade filter instead. For nearly 30 years it has picked up sawdust, brickdust and anything else that comes it's way, and still remains bagless. I must admit I did put a more powerful motor in some years ago, but the old one was still running fine when it came out.
Bagless technology is not new, it has just been [poorly] re-invented by somebody who has gone on to be extremely wealthy.

Hob, the future of all shops is doomed due to 'tinternet. Better one lorry making multi drops than hundreds of cars making the reverse trip. Also one delivery centre's carbon footprint much smaller than hundreds of shops dotted all over.
Don't like it but best to face up to it. Keeps the blood pressure down.
