Your mains hook up lead is probably 1.5mm 3 core. This is rated at 16amp, something you will not be drawing more than. No use going any heavier.

As you have double pole switched electrics in your van, I'm not sure why you want a polarity reverser.

Can I show my ignorance here and ask what a polarity reversing lead is and why it might be needed?

Thanks,
Steve.

Hi Steve.

It's a short length of "hook up" cable with either the male or female plug wired up the wrong way around. Then, if the EHU post at the campsite has been wired up with the polarity the wrong way around, you can add this short length of cable, in line, with your existing hook up cable, to correct the problem.

How do you know the polarity is wrong? We have a red light on our extension cable that we run from our EHU cable into our awning but other than that, I don't know. I always thought Eribas were dual polarity?

Don't think it makes any practical difference to you ! I understand that many appliances are switched on and off only on the +ve side, but reverse polarity means they would be switched on the -ve return side to turn off ! No damage will be done to the appliance or you unless you "play with the internals" whilst it is plugged into the mains ! Someone with more knowledge than me will correct me if I'm wrong ! ! ! :)

Steve,
I was lead to believe that in normal circumstances reverse polarity is not an issue you need to worry about. In fact our friends on mainland Europe wonder why we bother. But the problem lies as stated elsewhere that it is normally the positive that is switched and not the negative. As such the appliance could be live when you do not expect it.
Some appliances could be sensitive, but more to the point some users could be very sensitive. I am the latter and prefer to take caution, especially when it only means an extra short length of cable to be on the safe side.

I'm with you on this despite my recent post, I always carry a reverse polarity adapter when in France - never used it yet though !

And we use one just to get ride of that nagging red light on our extension lead

the simple answer would be to cut 3 feet off your normal hook up lead then put the plug back on, voila 3 feet of the correct cable
