ADAC: Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club. Yes, this is Germany's largest automobile club and I along with the wife have been members for well over 14 years now. Only needed to call upon their service once in all that time and that was regarding what turned out to be a defective battery mounted in my motorbike parked in our underground garage. No complaints about the service - quick, efficient and all very clean.

I have always used Red Pennant (35yrs) with the Caravan Club I have found it to be a truly excellent service. I have had to use them twice, once when my water pump broke in France and again in Spain when my head gasket broke and the head warped. I was stranded In Pamplona for ten days. On both occasions one phone call was all it took to take away the pressure, they arranged everything and just 'phoned me to tell me the next step that was to happen, even when they arranged our accommodation they 'phoned to ask If we would like It in town or more in the country. Even when I was faced with the final bill at the garage I explained to them that I was at the end of my credit limit and that I could not pay the garage bill and my accommodation costs, ( you are supposed to pay up front and then claim the money back,) they settled the accommodation costs for me. Truly wonderful service I would never travel without them.

We use ADAC because we go to Europe (Italy) for about 6 - 8 months at a time and it only costs about Euro 100 annually for the two of us. Never had to use them but their agents in the UK are the AA apparently.

Red Flag ( for members of the Caravan Club) and the C&CC equivalent are fine if you are only going for a couple of weeks, but it gets a rather expensive over longer periods.

Another option for European trips is a Nationwide Flex Plus account which for £10 a month gives you all sorts of goodies including Medical Insurance and European Breakdown cover. You are allowed a couple of pre-existing medical conditions FOC but then may have to pay a bit more for the medical cover.

A point to bear in mind is that ADAC includes repatriation if you are ill. As we found when a friend came to stay and was blue lighted into hospital, UK Medical insurance in Europe is really a repatriation service as your healthcare is covered by your EHIC card.
