Car Insurance

Has anyone else recently had the sob story from their Car Insurance Company regarding a huge hike in the Premium?

We've been with LV for many years and before that with Frizell before LV bought them out and we have not claimed for many years.

Last year for the first time they started playing silly buggers by sending a renewal quote for about £50 more than our previous quotes. I successfully argued them back down.

Today they are asking for a renewal of about £60 more and are using the excuse that payouts have gone up and the Government are putting the squeeze on them etc.

I've only managed to talk them down by about £40 (they tried to palm me off with a £15 discount which I feel is a slap in the face).

Mrs R said I should agree to accept it purely because of the hassle of getting all the facts together to get a like for like quote. What I find most annoying is that the LV Supervisor I was talking to agreed that I might well get a far better deal if I approached them online as a new customer, yet unfortunately he has no control over that fact.

You should get on a couple of the comparison websites. It only takes five minutes or so, and you're missing a trick if you don't do it.

It isn't a hassle, it's common sense. Why pay more than you need to for the sake of a few minutes?

There is no benefit in staying loyal to one company. Those days are long gone. If changing insurer at each renewal saves you money and means you don't have to argue the toss with people who really don't care if you stay with them or not, it's a no brainer.

In my 'umble, like.

The other thing I forgot to say is that the insurance companies' business model is to get customers to sign up for a policy with a hefty online discount in the expectation that a significant number of them will allow the policy to auto-renew a year later without even bothering to check to see if the premium has gone up or not.

There's then a second category of people (like you ) who do check, but find it less of a faff to stay than it would be to start with a fresh quote on Confused or Compare the Market or whatever.

There are obviously enough in the first two categories to more than compensate for those who do get fresh quotes and go elsewhere.

It's not just insurance companies who do this. Almost anything that comes with a free - or heavily discounted - introductory period (which you have to sign up for using a method of payment) and then charges the full whack if you don't remember to cancel within that period relies on what is essentially the same principle - customer inertia.

Don't be inert.

Make yourself a brew.

Get sat down in front of that keyboard and save yourself some dosh instead of frittering your time away badgering people to book for the Summer Meet

Go to your pc, laptop, tab whatever, delete cookies ! Go for a new online quote, it'll almost certainly be better that what you have been told, but you must delete cookies if you've tried it before same goes with all those insurances, gas, electric, phone etc hth

Every year when I renew my all my insurance policies I check on the comparison sites, I was advised to do this by a friendly broker , I have checked my renewal costs and I have renewed with the same company as I was with, but at a cheaper price. I have just renewed my caravan Insurance for the same price that I paid last year even though the premium tax has gone up.

I'm with him in that I don't think twice about swopping and changing my insurance companies when it comes to parting with the 'hard earned' with the only stipulation being that the policies on offer are comparable and that the company has a reputation for reliability. The days of brand/branch loyalty, whether it be insurance or banking to name but two, are long gone. Today you are just a name and number and this was evident last weekend when I opened a letter from Company 'X' advising that I had 100,000 Euros immediately to spend and all that was needed was for me to append my signature to the already completed form. Nice - they didn't even spell my name correctly on the letter.

Hi Roger
We too were with LV and they hiked it up another £60 and when I did a quote online with LV, it came in £5 less than paying at mo!! Phoned them and they said they couldn't match it!!!!!...same company. So did it online and got the cheaper price. That was last year.
This year they hiked it again to £430 with AA, so went on money supermarket.com and Saga came in at £277 incl AA cover. I then rang Saga up and the woman then entered my surname in lower case (I had put it in in upper case) and low and behold she got it for £228!!!!! Hence I have saved myself nearly £200 just by shopping around and with the same no claims etc etc
