65p for a first class stamp? 65p?
That's thirteen shillings. Who'd have thought back in 1970 that it'd cost thirteen shillings to send a letter?
In 1965, me and my mate Tim Emery found half a crown in a jamjar full of foreign coins in our sideboard. We though about putting it back, but for no more than half a second.
We spent it on Blackjacks and Fruit Salads down the corner shop.
They were four a penny back then, so we walked out with a hundred and twenty of them in a big paper bag. Mr Read, the bloke who owned the shop, held the bag aloft by its corners and turned it over in front of him three or four times to twist them up.
You don't see that any more.
We ate them all within an hour
The price of a first class stamp today would buy us six hundred and twenty four.
That's probably more than there were in the whole jar up there on the shelf next to the humbugs, barley sugars and aniseed balls.
Sigh...

Funny really....I don't go out much to do the shopping but I had the same experience in the post office where I asked for a first class stamp
to post a letter. I was asked did I want the one or would I prefer a book? I thought might as well buy a book until she told me the price,
'HOW MUCH' I exclaimed !
I can't remember how much it was now and I haven't been out shopping since.

There are so many other ways of keeping in touch these days that postal volumes are falling rapidly also the GPO no longer has a monopoly on delivery mainly of parcels.
Meaning that they have to charge realisticly add to that the fact that they still have to deliver the less profitable stuff the couriers don't want (letters) etc
Its no surprise that charges are higher than in the days when you could get 4 blackjacks for a penny.
if we still had to live on 20 quid a week I could understand the concern but those days are long gone.

Slightly off topic I know, but last off, while I was officially retired but Mrs R was still working, I was working as a part-time self employed courier.
I gave it up when I saw the writing on the wall, or rather, the side of the "NEXT" wagon. Order before midnight and have it tomorrow morning? GREAT . So "MRS I want to go to a party in 10 days time" gets her frock 9 days before the ball thanks to the efforts of a little man in a van/car having to drive 10 miles out of his way to ensure it happens.
Next time your friendly courier delivers an Amazon parcel to you, ask him or her about how the round is organised and how much he gets (approx. 60p when I last looked).

I appreciate that for many people there may not be that much in the way of alternative employment, but the fact remains that it's their choice to do it.
There's an argument for saying that nobody should sign up for a job - any job - without knowing exactly what it involves.

Being anything in life isn't compulsory. I was just making the point that it isn't always necessary to have everything delivered immediately.

I didn't quite understand towards whom your ire was directed. This happens every time your simmering incandescence boils over. You become unintelligible

It's not my fault you don't understand Welsh.
