Number plate for new Triton

I know this is a simple question - but I'm having a bad day and we're STILL WAITING for our Triton 410 ordered in May 2016

Anyhoo - on the assumption that Mr AL will eventually be telling us it has arrived I was just wondering what documents you need to get a number plate made up these days please?

Last time I did one it was sticky letters on a bit of plastic but I understand times have changed a bit!

Wenn Sie hier auf Links zu eBay klicken und einen Kauf tätigen, kann dies dazu führen, dass diese Website eine Provision erhält.

There are plenty of people on eBay who'll do it lots cheaper than Halfords, for example, and who won't ask for documents. I don't pretend to know the legality of this, but the fact that they're all still there suggests that the DVLA are turning a blind eye.

I know someone - I know him... erm... extremely well, as it happens - who has ordered plates from eBay on several occasions without a problem.

Only problem with the on-line plates, if legal, is that you have to send them your original identity and entitlement documents. Not something I should like to do.
Try your local motor factors, or even Halfords, they will make up plates for you. They will also need to see your documents, e.g. Driving Licence & V5, but you will still have control of them! I recently purchased new plates from my local motor factor, done on the premises in about 3 mins while I waited and cheaper than the legal on-line firms.

Without wishing to argue the toss - and I haven't looked at them all - eBay sellers don't ask for the original documents. Most will dispatch within one working day, so they couldn't anyway.

I find it difficult to believe that DVLA aren't aware of this, and if they are, why haven't they insisted that eBay remove the sellers and/or prosecuted them?

It's been like that for ages.

I'm not suggesting that people should use them, just making them aware of the service.

If I were to order some would I be complicit in a crime or, if the onus is on the seller, why do they still do it?

Provided the supplied plates meet the required criteria (and sellers often quote the relevant BSAU), then there is obviously a loophole here which DVLA can't be bothered to close. It's not as if there's one geezer knocking these things out in his garden shed either - there are dozens of them.

I ordered from Lowdhams Nottingham in June and got my Triton a couple a few weeks ago, so your wait time is not that unrealistic. I believe dealers have build slots and you may have just missed one at your time of order.
I wondered about the number plate issue and took one with me, to be told they were making one for me once they saw the tow car registration. Ask AL to provide one.

Just out of curiosity, did Lowdhams ask to see the car's V5, Colin?

No. That is why I was surprised.

Hi Pepe,

I suppose it's like a lot of things these days, they probably haven't got the resources to Police it properly, if you haven't nicked the tow car and changed the plates or have been sold (unwittingly) a stolen one ( things this requirement is supposed to help fight ) then I doubt whether you'd ever come to DVLAs attention, but as to why they can't close down the e-bay cowboys is a mystery!

Insist that AL make up your No. plate FOC - along with the A frame / hitch cover it's free advertising for them.

I collected our new Troll GT 540 last week from Lowdhams Nottingham and these were included as routine. As a precaution I took a copy of the car registration document but it was not needed.

Incidentally, I was hugely impressed with Lowdhams; staff knowledgeable, professional, friendly; made me feel most welcome, a valued customer etc...

I have plates for my vans made by these companies without being asked for any documentation.

Thanks very much for the interesting replies - I don't think the word 'free' is part of AL vocabulary :)

The UK Gov web site, however, threw up a whole lot of names I've never thought of all within a few miles - great stuff.
