Wasted storage space in rear overhead locker??

I'm not sure if this applies to all Eriba/Hymer vans but I was recently watching the caravan show on Sky who were reviewing a brand new Hymer caravan (very nice but very expensive!)).
A point was made about wasted internal space in each corner of the overhead lockers which were panelled off for no obvious reason. As I had already wondered why my 2005 Puck had the same issue (where any extra space is a bonus) I wondered why this is done?? It can't be for cosmetic reasons as the panel is inside the locker and wouldn't be seen.

I have had call to access these areas on previous and new van when running cables. You are not missing anything, possibly enough for a couple of pairs of socks.. The spaces are a lot smaller than you would think, more so on the new vans with the corner pelmet lights. They are also very rough inside as they are the end runs of mouldings, roof linings and insulation, that have to terminate somewhere.

Thanks for the explanation Colin but where on earth am I going to put those extra couple of pairs of socks now!!

As someone who has run cables in such spaces, there is a TV coax cable/plug sticking out of the hidden space. If I pull it about 2 foot of cable comes out but I've searched high and low and can't find the other end!
Any ideas? David

David,
the other end of the cable can [in the case of Familia/Triton/Troll] be found under the seating area. It runs down from the top box, through the insulation behind the wallboard and appears in usually a fag packet sized plastic white or brown box on the floor. This is directly below the top location.

Is this cable standard or an optional extra?

I believe it used to be a standard spec/build in item. I recall I had it on a 2001 Triton, 2007 Troll and 2006 Familia.I would imagine it may have gone when build moved to Germany for 2010 vans onwards as the cable is not in my present 2017 van.

Great, thanks. I have a 2014. Shall have a poke around over the weekend. Not that I want a telly.

No tv cable in either of our 2013 Triton or 2016 Troll. I often wondered if this was an extra just for the UK market as the Brits love their Coronation Street lol.

No, I have one in my 2006 van and I had that imported from Holland.

I have a, what appears to me, to be a very large wasted space to the right of the overhead locker above the kitchen in my Triton 420, it looks to be much larger than the spaces that DBVWT referred to in his original post. I'm just trying to figure out a way of cutting though from inside the locker and making a neat job of it, any ideas.

Btw, also found the tv connection in the front o/h locker, I wonder how and where would you mount the tv 🤔 ?

Chris,
can't you unscrew the internal panel from the locker to the hidden bit?
For tv, how about an under cabinet mount. I bought this one, an AVTEX TV SCREEN SVENSON 6.0:- Werbung: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291173983852?_...K%3AMEBIDX%3AIT and was going to fit it in the new van, but other half did not like it. As I have got away with most things so far I have not pushed my look. Available unused but opened for £10 + p&p.

When we ran wires through ours, the partition was only made of thin laminate which was glued to a block along the floor of the cupboard and a similar one on the vertical.

Hi Colin/Randa

The panel appears to be glued in, can't see any external fixings, but like Randa suggests, I assume that it is glued to a frame, I find it surprising the Eriba let you go round th the left, in front of the loo, big enough for a small electric kettle, but not to the right which looks to be a much more useable space.

Thanks for the link, I was going to mount the tv on the wardrobe side but will give this some consideration 👍

Hi Chris. Can I suggest a bit of bent wire slid behind the panel at the top where it curves, to try and gauge what thickness it is?

If like on ours it's only about 3mm thick then with a little bit of tugging you should be able to remove it. Ours was easy but it had been there for 14 years before I had a go at it.
