Have you ever felt a bit slow..............

Bit of background to this problem which I' sure will be so simple to others. We are lifelong tenters and so used to not having running water or toilet in the tent. When we decided to "Eribaise" we were not that bothered about our own toilet or hot water but my wife persuaded me that as we got older we might use such things. So when we bought our Troll 540 this summer we had the hot water boiler as an extra. On our first four outings we didn't use the toilet or the hot water at all, using the site facilities as we had always done. However on the fifth outing the weather was bad so I got the cassette toilet working. We are going to Edinburgh next week and my wife has suggested that as it might be a bit cold that I got the hot water boiler working. No problem thought I

However yesterday, after a time studying the Truma & Eriba instructions, I spent a frustrating afternoon somehow covering the drive with water draining from the Truma boiler. I got the boiler heating up with both the gas /electric and the electric systems but when I turned the hot tap on only a little warm water came through the tap but at the same time all the water from the cold water tank seemed to be being drawn through the boiler and then onto the drive.

There are two valves in the boiler area and I am sure that I am doing these wrong but can't work out how. There is a yellow simple open close lever valve with "close" being horizontal and "open" being vertical, which is on a pipe with blue lines. Then there is a round blue valve that is on a pipe with a red line on it. How do I set these to get the hot water coming out of the tap and not emptying the water on to the drive? Is there another valve somewhere that I should be doing something with?

Any help would be gratefully accepted as I am sure I am just being a bit thick.

Hi Mike

You just need to make sure both drain valves are closed - the yellow for cold and the blue for hot. The blue valve is turned clockwise to close and the yellow one is closed in either of the horizontal positions, but be careful because if you push it down too far (past the horizontal) the valve will be open again.
To fill the boiler, open just one hot tap (the one nearest to the boiler) and when it's stopped spluttering, close it off and do the same with the other hot tap.

Hi John
We tried that and it worked as we got warm water through into both taps

However went in to watch England play having left the electric boiler on, to try to get the water really hot. Just gone out now after the match and the water seems to have gone back from the boiler into the cold water tank and the hot water tap is producing slightly tepid water and the boiler seems to be re-filling from the cold water tank. Is there something else I should be doing to stop the boiler water going back into the cold water tank?

Cheers

Do you have the Truma Ultrastore gas & electric boiler or the Truma Therme electric boiler?

Not that it makes much difference - whichever boiler you have it sounds like you need an inline non-return valve fitted between the tank and the boiler inlet, or perhaps there is one and it's faulty.

If your pipework is the12mm semi-rigid type the valve you need is the Truma spring-loaded NRV, part no 40060-88000.

Thanks John. I will have a check to see if I can find one. The boiler is the Truma gas and electric one. Have you any idea where a a non-return valve might be situated? There does seem to be a blue valve of somekind near to the fresh water tank - might it be this?

Do pay attention, Mike

It would be useful if I could see a pic of the pipework around the tank & boiler.

No, Nev, but can you post a pic of the Truma NRV part no I posted earlier. I'm about to shoot off to a job.

We have the same boiler and have had exactly the same problem with the hot water.

It gets hot then after a couple of hours the tank seems to be full of air again then we have to turn the boiler off, let it reset and then fill the boiler up again.

It went back to the dealers (Lowdhams) after the second time we used it and had the same issue who fitted a non return valve. We have used it once since then and had exactly the same issue so it went back in again and the technicians say they can't find a fault, despite us having the issue.

They advised us to check all the blue valves are screwed closed, including the 2 under the bed at the rear near the water tank, as well as the one next to boiler. We still haven't tried it since but hopefully should be working now.

It was interesting to see we are not the only ones having this issue.

On a plus side, when the water gets hot, it's fantastic, as long as we use it every 10 minutes to stop the air building back up.

As well checking to see if your system has an NRV (as in Hob's pic posted earlier) could you also check that the water system works with the boiler switched off:

1. Check both drain valves are closed and make sure the cold tank is full.
2. Purge the system as you did before to get a constant flow of water from all taps.
3. Check under the van that there's no water coming out of the drain valves.

If all ok switch the boiler on and let the water heat to operating temperature - this is to check that the boiler's PRV (Pressure Relief Valve) isn't letting water by under normal conditions (The PRV is the top red elbow connector with the hot water outlet pipe and a clear drain tube connected to it).

There shouldn't be any water coming out of the clear drain tube - if there is, and the water in the boiler isn't boiling like a kettle, then the PRV is faulty.

Let's see how you get on.

hmmmmmmm well hot water for us comes from a kettle either gas or electric. Washing up either crockery or personal is in the amenity block

Agreed. After all the fun and games of water heaters, Truma boilers, cleaning, draining etc etc in the MH one of the big draw factors with the MegaPuck 410 (for us) is getting away from all that fuss.

OK 2 kettles are needed gas/electric and it may be a bit slower than on tap, but...............
