As some of you will know last year I had a motor mover fitted to the Triton.
The 110 Ah battery lives under a rear seat which becomes the bed in a 430 Triton, and as I like to leave the bed made up (mattress topper etc) getting under there with a digital test meter to check the battery voltage is ok, ........ can be a bit of a pain.

When I fitted a battery to the old Puck i bought one of those cheap (made in china) digital voltage indicators for a couple of quid which promptly melted when attached tp the battery terminals.

So this time I'm looking a bit more upmarket

Is that one OK?

I would hopefully be mounting it on the side of the wardrobe by drilling through into the cavity behind the gas heater and running the wires up the inside to the meter where it would fit in a hole cut in the side wall.

Is it as simple as just connecting the 2 wires to the 2 battery terminals?

That will do the trick, Nev - just as long as you remember those numbers are Volts and not ergs, poles, perches, rods, groats or whatever you use in your neck of the woods

No, it's infinitely more technical than that - you'll also need to make sure the red wire goes to battery +ve, and the black wire to battery -ve

Hi Nev. I'm thinking of doing the same. Lifting up the bed to check the battery is a pain.

At the moment my multimeter says the battery is at 12.9V and has been for 24 hours. However when I reconnect the Eriba supply (Schaudt 409) it is being charged at 14.4V. Something doesn't seem right. Shouldn't it have dropped to maintainance rate of about 13.?V?

Thanks Pete. I have the same instruction pages but they're very basic and don't give any detail on the charging regime.

You're right - the only vaguely helpful thing it gives you is the trickle charge rate.

Can't you just disconnect the Schaudt, bang the Ctek on and watch it to see if it ramps down the charging voltage as per?

Then at least you'll know that the battery is okay.

This is the charging regime. It works on an IUoU cycle.

Good luck with deciphering that lot. If I were you I'd copy it into an e-mail to GCHQ.

Thanks Pete, that is really helpful. GCHQ is busy checking up on you so I tried to understand it myself.
Now it begins to make sense.
My battery is a Banner AGM so in the charge regime I Uo U the Uo stage registers as 14.1V for an extended period but the current is reducing during this stage. That's what I had not realised.
So as you suggested I will go back to the bench with the Ctek charger then return it to the Schaudt and record what happens.
Thanks again.

This charging malarkey has got me thinking. Our van had an aftermarket 230V charger (a Waeco) fitted at some point, probably by Lechlade. It works, but it's a big, heavy bugger, and I can't help but think it might be sensible to take it out and plumb in a Ctek semi-permanently instead.

It'd save some weight - quite a bit, really - some space and some unnecessary wiring. The other thing I'd do is mount it on some closed-cell foam to absorb some of the shocks and vibration of travelling; I do wonder sometimes just how clever it is to screw all these whizzo bits of electronics hard to the furniture or the floor.

I've had to resolder two dry joints in the mover control box in the past, and although it's probably coincidental, a bit more compliance in the mountings probably wouldn't go amiss.

It'd be interesting to travel in the van sometime (I know it's illegal), just to see if the ride is as hard as I think it is.

I reckon you are right about the vibration issue. It's interesting about the mover control box. Was there a fault?
I'm wondering if my assumption of a battery fault could actually be something else.

Well I ordered one Sunday afternoon and it arrived today.

Here it is next to a spare camera card for scale.

Wired it up temporary to test it with some left over motorbike cable.

Changed my mind about running a load of cable up the inside of the wardrobe and will probably mount it on the side of the storage area near the power switches.

Presumably it uses very little power and stays on all the time?

Good idea to mount it low down otherwise the light may be distracting.

If you fit an LCD display (as opposed to an LED), you can mount it at a more convenient position for viewing without any distracting light.

They were all LED on fleabay Looked at loads of pages of them.
At least fitting it there means the cables (and the inside of the meter) will not get in the way in the wardrobe and I can still see it without dragging all the bedding out of the way to use a multimeter.
