checking the gas level

I have a Calor gas lite bottle which weighs 4.5Kg empty, when it was full it weighed in at 10.5kg so it has 6kg of propane. I have one of those magnetic stick on levels, they are very pretty but that's about all its good for as it never changes colour to indicate the level. I also have a ultrasonic Dometic gas level and as far as that is concerned the bottle is on vapors and not enough to fry an egg with, so save your money and don't buy either.

The Calor lite does come with an inbuilt gauge and although known to be not very accurate it did show that it was approximately half full. Anyhows just to make sure I took the bottle out of the gas box and weighed it, it weighed just below 7.5kg, so it has approximately 3.Kg of propane which is half full.

Strange findings with the Dometec as following good reviews by our favourite magazine we bought one and found it quite accurate. Following closely the instructions is an absolute must though.

I even tried my Dometic on a full bottle of wine and it said it was empty, I put it straight in the recycling bin, such a shame as it looked like it was going to be a nice drop of wine...

Reviews on Amazon for the Dometic don't seem good, and it is pricey. Can anybody recommend a good reliable product?

Had the same cylinder (6 Kg) for 3 years now still in use, any campsite owner will know where the nearest stockist is when it runs out.

Why worry,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I read about those once they are supposed to work on temperature, when liquid turns to gas it cools so in theory it will only give a reading when you are using gas.

The problem is if you are not in the UK.

I don't go abroad but I understand those that do have one of each in the locker?

It is the Calorlite that I have. I was unsure of the accuracy of the gauge and miss being able to see the content level as on my previous BP Gaslight. The later was however very squat with a larger footprint, which I do not miss.

The Caorlite isn't 100% accurate but it's a dam sight better than that Domtic or magnetic sticker...

Thank you. I will stick with the way I am until something better comes along.

The magnetic sticker only works when you are using the cylinder. The gas is colder than the liquid when it is working and the magnetic sticker spots the temperature difference at the liquid gas interface. You just have to have it at the right height on the cylinder.
