The silliest of questions !

Every now again a very silly question is asked and this one probably takes the biscuit for this category, but here goes: We are about to head off to Orkney and the Shetland Islands for our second trip. Some of the sites advertise hard standing pitches for caravans which have hook ups which we like the look of. My question is, is it possible to erect a Kampa awning on a hard standing pitch? How would one peg down the awnings in these spots? My apologies for such a basic question but in the past we have camped with a tent so have not needed a hard standing pitch. I prewired you that it was a silly question but I hope someone will forgive our ignorance and reply out of compassion if nothing else!

Not a silly question at all.

You need to equip yourself with some "Hard Ground" pegs. They usually do the trick as long as the campsite owners are not having a laugh.

Hard ground or 'rock pegs' will work anywhere even soft earth so they are all you need. Ditch the wire skewers and all the plastic ones.

Hi our air awning has a foot print to protect the base when on a hard standing (basically just a ground sheet)

Get yourself a small lump hammer as well as the rock pegs otherwise it will be like using a toffee hammer to knock them in the hardstandings. I have a 2lb lump hammer, just make sure you don't miss

A heavy claw hammer with a big head is also a great peg puller.

The hard standing at Lychett Manor were rock hard. I have a proper mallet and rock pegs but found it almost impossible. The other element in my problem was my ageing lack of strength and direction. Talking to some wobbly white vanners there told me they drill holes first with a power tool then hammer pegs in. How daft is that, more stuff and weight to carry, but they've got big white storage too.

If you get a claw hammer and you'll maybe have to file the claw open a little, then it's great for knocking them in and for taking them out again.

Heavy Duty screw in pegs - 13mm head - plus Wolf 18v 1/2" drive cordless impact wrench, which doubles up for stays if required but especially for that moment when you find you've got to get a wheel off.....

Something else to remember when on hard standing is to just check the caravan feet after a couple of days, the hard core has a habit of settling down and it will leave your caravan feet off the ground by a couple of cms and you may need to tweak them slightly..
