Leisure battery not charging on the move

Hi there,
Had our 2007 Troll for a year now since we imported it from Denmark. When bought, it already had a leisure battery installed, alongside the standard Power Pack (not SE). There is also a standard battery charger installed under the bed/seat that charges the battery whilst connected to 230v. Having had a mover installed last year, I've realised that the 'van battery isn't being charged whilst connected to the car and on the move. It has the 13 pin plug arrangement and I've checked pin 9 on the car socket, and that's giving out a healthy 14v or so when the car's running. The 'van battery voltage doesn't change though when connected and having used the mover to get the car off the drive, turned, lined up and hooked up etc, there's then not always enough left in the battery to move the 'van when on site.

If my understanding is correct, the standard Power Pack doesn't provide charging to the leisure battery from the car.

I was thinking to simply have a Split Charge Relay installed, connected to cable 9 on the 13 pin cable. Or would I be better off changing the Power Pack completely to a new version, that charged the battery from the car whilst connected and on the move, and also included a 230v charger as well, and ditch the standalone charger that i currently have.

The fridge does work whilst connected and switched to 12v with the switch illumination coming on, but I was under the impression the fridge running and battery charging were completely separate - is that the case?

Apologies if anything's not clear, but hoping you wise people will be able to offer some guidance

In anticipation,

Mark

Hello Mark

I've produced a schematic which shows details on how to modify your BIP (P/No 30-12854) to add the charging function you require.
You'll need to fit an additional 3 core cable from the underfloor-mounted junction box to the charging relay you mention, and a fuse block for 3 fuses.
The modification includes changes to the BIPs PCB to ensure the awning light is inoperative when the car's connected.

Let me know if the schematic will be useful to you and I'll send you a copy.

I have a Troll with a Reich mover, the only way to recharge it is when it is hooked up to the mains. We travelled extensively last year, In France without recharging as we drove and there seemed to be plenty of charge to manouevre the van whenever we needed it. I think the secret is a good charger like a Ctek, these smart chargers keep the battery in tip top condition. The battery is two years old in November and so far so good.
