Vintage or modern Eriba

Just a little debate to all the Eriba owners what's your choice, vintage or modern ????
Do you go for comfort of the modern Eriba or the vintage look, obviously people have different ages, models. Having been the owner of several VW camper vans we decided to sell and settle on a bit more comfort. Though we have still retained the classic look with the purchase of a 1999 Eriba puck 120 it is towed by an Audi A3. In the past we camped with the VW and a retro drive away awning spending many happy weeks up and down the East coast of Yorkshire.

I must admit that when we set out to purchase our Eriba we wanted one as new as possible but within our budget. We were looking for a 320 at the time aged around the 2003 mark.

However, having missed several we took a trip to AL and Mrs R was smitten by our 1999 Troll. Over the years, it has proved very reliable and (touch wood) no bits have dropped off. No wardrobe doors have swung loose, no water has ingressed.

Therefore, we are very pleased with it and have no plans to change it.

Same here. We'd never had a caravan before and like so many others on here I presume had fallen in love with the external appearance of the classic grey and white Eriba.

After nine months of scanning AL's adverts we rushed over to Poole (only 12 miles away) and put a deposit on our 2003 Triton 420 with the long beds.

So far it has done everything we could hope for and, like the Randas, we can see no advantage in buying something newer and far more expensive that does exactly the same job.

As the others I wanted something newish within my budget, I did not want to have anything over 2008 and ideally was looking for a 2'000. I ended up with a 2008 Triton 420 with long beds and central cupboard rather than large table, which was sourced by Dom Fox after discussing what I was looking for.
Reason for my 2000 - 2008 was not for the cost of newer although a factor, but more to do with the quality I researched seems to have diminished for some reason.

After a lifetime of adventure with backpacking and cycletouring tents there was no way that I would have wanted to purchase a 'normal' white wobbly box....
My choice of an Eriba was because of the individual style and retro looks.

The decision to buy brand new in 2015 was based purely on the fact that my intention was to use it for fulltiming for a few years and as such wanted something that had not been used before...
However, in terms of preference of style I do think that the earlier vans have a bit more character than the more modern ones like mine.

Having said that, after two years of living/touring in a small space I do not regret my decision to buy the Eriba.....

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say, I have had a 1994 Puck and a 2012 & 2015 Familia 320. Both have their own merits. I changed the 2012 for a 2015 model as the interior harked back to the older vans. So I feel I have the best of both worlds at the moment....

vintage or modern are relative terms with a wealth of room to manoeuvre in between, with the 60th anniversary model in the planning stages... or even early production.

Unlike your camper van experience there seems to be little or no value or prestige in owning a vehicle from a particular era or style when it comes to Eribas.

My decision was based on the fact that I found the previous one (a Puck) too small and looking at layouts decided a 430 Triton would suit my needs better.

It then came down to price and availability, at the time (long way pre brexit) prices were cheaper in Holland even getting it delivered so that is how I came to have my 2006 Triton at the time it was 7 years old ..... now 11 years old I have altered things somewhat and it meets my needs well so will remain for the foreseeable future.

Vintage for us all the way, why? Well a load of reasons... difficult to express... nothing wrong with the new Eribas but for us, no depth of character to them either. Having said that, if we were forced to buy a brand new 2017 caravan then rather than choosing any other model we would of course have an Eriba

Cheers,
Angie and Steve.

We didn't choose Betty, she chose us. We went to see her and she captured us completely. 1997 Triton 430. In very good shape for her years. What grabbed me was the loo, I must admit, but she's very pretty. Once I re-did the inside - the original was a yellow explosion - now she's a beaut.

It is clearly in the eye of the beholder. When my Mam died three years ago she left us a bit of money that she wanted use to use for something that would bring us enjoyment that we couldn't otherwise afford. We decided to replace our tent with a caravan and spent 18 months looking at all sorts of caravans. However a day spent with AL at Poole, sitting in all sorts of Eribas, made the decision for us. Like others we were captivated by them. We then had to decide which model and from what era. This wasn't an easy decision as they all have their strong points and foibles. In the end we went for the space of the Troll, with the 540 configuration. We stood looking at a white original and then a silver GT for ages before deciding that the GT looked more cool and class.

The Troll 540 GT took me back over 50 years to my scooter days and the decision of getting a Lambretta TV175 over a Vespa GP. Thanks to being able to put my Mam's money towards it we were able to get a spanker, although I winced at the price. All the Eribas look extra special but for us the silver 540GT has the edge.Have just seen the 60th Edition Eribas on Adventure Leisure Vehicle site and I still prefer the inside of our model - think the white cupboard doors look a bit naff. But again personal choice - someone will love it.

Hi Soulbluesman,

Can you link the 60th anniversary models on the Adventure Leisure site. Been looking but for the life of me can't see it for toffee!

Cheers
