Our Purchase in of a 2001 Puck L was governed by : MUST fit our garage and be easy to tow and ready at any time ! We love the Retro looks and think the build quality is good !

A brand new van would be lovely BUT nothing small enough in the range to fit our garage ! And I'm not convinced that I like the 'modern' looks now and with so many more electrical items to go wrong, I rather think I'm un- convinced about the current "quality" ! Although a larger van with toilet , fixed bed and dinette would be great ! BUT it has to fit into our garage - so a NO Go !

So from my point of view "Vintage " is my preferred choice

We have a 95 Pan, a Dutch import which is in really nice order and which we bought to help facilitate touring in a light aircraft of all things.

When I am touring my husband (unpaid crew chief) follows on with the Eriba. Saves either trying to find a B&B late in the day or pitching a tent on a windswept grass strip airfield in the middle of nowhere.

Best purchase we ever made! Now we have a proper little “home” at the end of a day. We modified it to have a leisure battery (Dutch vans tends to rely heavily on EHU) plus we have a little pure sine generator anyway. To top it off we also have a Wigo lightweight canopy, a small 12V TV and a nice little portable gas BBQ.

The only down side is that wherever we go we seem to attract other pilots looking for a sit down, a cup of tea and a free bacon sandwich.

Buying a “Vintage” Eriba has been a wise move, investing in a new shiny one would have been nice of course but I don’t think we are missing that much for what we use it for.

This forum was very instrumental in leading us towards an Eriba, we had quite a good read of it when thinking our options through and realised that the Eriba offered everything we needed in a very neat and easy to tow package.

Looked at the new vans but I'm sticking with my 2008 550 Troll as the build quality is far better (IMO)

At what point do these vans stop being vintage and become modern? Is 2008 (i.e. before the taller facelifted version with the shallower roof) vintage?

I'd have thought vintage would be much, much older than that. You wouldn't call a car made since 2000 a vintage car, after all. I appreciate that it's all relative, because cars have been around a lot longer, but I wouldn't describe any car fitted with ABS as vintage. That puts it around the late seventies.

Sixties? Fifties? Forties? And how old does a car have to be for it to be a veteran?

Our Troll is a 2008 version, which only makes it nine years old. Surely that isn't vintage.

If we were having this conversation in 2005, for example, when would the transition from vintage to modern have been?

Are there any veteran Eribas around?

Has anyone here got what they consider to be a veteran?

Some of the owners could be classed as veteran. 😇

And some of the owners also come with a dimpled finish - I think it's called cellulite, Tony.

I'd prefer the use of 'classic' and 'post-classic', the former being traditional grey and white up to the introduction of the raised awning rail height, say, and the latter referring to everything subsequent to that. The early pimply-skinned models could simply be referred to as 'old'. (Sorry, Roger, but I couldn't resist it.)

As to which is best, that's easy. It's the one you currently own. It's only a personal opinion.

The classic/vintage tag has got me confused now, I use to own a 1980s Lada Riva deluxe,. Yes there was a deluxe model it had wipers on the headlights it was a nice touch except the wipers didn't actually touch the headlamp glass It would continually cut out in protest going over 65 miles an hour going into silent running mode until it coughed and kicked back in again with a cloud of smoke. It would have puncture every 150 miles, I got that good at changing them over I could have been employed by the Jaguar Le mans tyre changing team.. It would take great delight at revving itself when idling at traffic lights egging on the spotty Nova driver to race it, it was a very commendable brave act except it would just stall and cut out when I set off. None f the Windows worked and needed a 2' plank inserted in the door to keep them up. The boot lid thought it was part of a James Bond scene and would open itself up like a bullet proof shield whilst driving.

Classic or Vintage?

Neither. Just a pile of crap

That business of the engine doing what it felt like when it felt like it reminded me of my mate's dad's car, a long, long time ago. It was a Marina. That should say it all, really...

We'd all pile in it to go to the pub, like you did. When we got there, we'd all pile out. Like you do. My mate included. The thing was that he'd take the ignition key out and put it in his pocket (like you do), but the car's timing was so far out that the engine would keep running by itself, to the accompaniment of much chuntering and the occasional backfire.

Other than deliberately stalling it, the only other way to make it stop was to press the brake pedal. The extra load of the brake lights on the alternator was more than the poor old thing could stand.

That party trick was its only redeeming feature. Other than that it was truly, truly horrid.

I wonder whatever happened to British Leyland?

That's an easy one to answer, there's a strict definition of a veteran car: it must have been made before 1919.

See - http://www.vccofgb.co.uk/

I guess, if we follow the car related categories of veteran, vintage and classic, even the oldest Eribas fall into the most recent band of 'classic'.

Cheers,
Steve.
