Our Milenco Compact clamp has done us proud having been attached to the Triton now on every day and in all weathers for the past six years. On our recent UK trip, however, I noticed that it was rusting badly, particularly on the parts hidden from view when fitted.

To stave off having to replace the clamp (approx £80), I decided to remove the rust and refinish it using a can of Hammerite smooth spray paint that can be applied direct to rusty metal without prior rustproofing or priming.
I realise that corrosion will continue in places that I couldn't reach with the spray and that probably, on reflection, I'd have been better off using a brush, but overall I'm quite pleased with the result. How long it will last is anyone's guess though.

Nice job there old son. Never seen a wheel clamp in such a shoddy state and looks worse than a WW2 tank part that has recently been discovered in a trench.

It's not the entire answer for they still rust be we always put our Protec wheel cover over our wheel lock when touring. It saves the dust and some of the elements getting at it. (also saves a bit of embarrassment as it hides it away and saves the inevitable question from a Dutch or French guy who asks "what on earth do you need that for?")

I've grown used over the years to that horrid M le Pew taking me to task but as he's been very quiet lately (plastered on Adnam's finest no doubt) I suppose someone else has had to step into his shoes and 'have a go'.
Here, just for you is a picture hot off the camera of the obverse aspect of my clamp showing clearly that eight coats of Hammerite definitely need more than 24 hours to harden. Curses!
Still, I think it was worth doing.
