Heat shielding above cooker

The older vans had lots of nice sheets of aluminium around the cooker, these seems to have been omitted in recent years - perhaps they're jut not 'on trend' enough... However, I do wonder about the lockers and 'woodwork' above the cooker. Common sense says you don't suspend wood over a gas ring - but that's how we get the toast on the wire pyramid thing - OK it doesn't taste like wood, I mean the cupboards above it.
All the heat from the burner goes up the centre and is bound to be heating up stuff overhead.

I know many people will say they never cook in the van etc etc. We always open the window behind and a side window to keep a bit of a thru-draft.

I'm sort of itching to put something up there to deflect the heat - anyone else done this?

I've had 3 camper vans and now the Puck all with wood cabinets of some kind above the hob.
In the beginning I had the same concerns as you have but in truth I've never had a single problem over many years (and we do quite a bit of cooking inside).

Robin. There's a recent thread on the subject here:- Puck metal heat shield/splashback. which the original poster didn't bother to answer.

They are for older vans however.

Silicone sheet is heat-resistant. You can get it in translucent self-adhesive form Werbung: on eBay.

If you were particularly concerned you could use some of that (cut to suit as necessary) on the bottom of the locker above the cooker, and it would likely protect it from the worst effects of the heat.

I'm not a huge fan of something made of aluminium sheet. The splash guard things, while undoubtedly good at guarding against splashes, are a bit too much like something which would get you an aluminium splash-guard maker's badge if you were in the Scouts.

I'd ditch ours if I could think of something more elegant.

I would never have thought of that. What a good idea - thank you!
