Eriba Car Fridge

Hi All,

Our Eriba Car is fitted with an Electrolux fridge, it works on gas & 240v but not on 12v.

I have checked the fridge relay and with the engine running there is power from the relay to the fridge however the 12v switch does not illuminate.

Obviously I need to gain access to the rear of the fridge to check the wiring, any fuse and the heater unit. Here I have a problem. The fridge vents, which on all modern camper vans and caravans are removable for servicing appear to be fixed in place. Upon removal of the external louvred vent the mounting frame, which has a flyscreen, is stuck and screwed (rusty) to the vehicle blocking access. Obviously I can, with many expletives!, get the frame off. However, it strikes me as a very odd way of servicing, that you have to unscrew/unseal the only means of access to the burner etc.

I had thought that may be you accessed the fridge from the front, but I believe that fridges are connected to the gas supply by a rigid pipe, which is attached to the rear so the fridge cannot be drawn forward without disconnecting this pipe

Do any other members have an Electrolux fridge, perhaps in an older Eriba, and if so what are the vent arrangements? and how is it serviced?

Thanks,

Chris

Is there a shutoff valve in the cupboard next to it? you may be able to disconnect the pipework where it goes through the cupboard wall and pull the fridge out?

Ooh er. Not recommending it but following our accident the fridge ended up parked in the wardrobe, wardrobe door still attached. All pipework seemed to be still attached and there was certainly no smell of gas leaking in the van. Don't know if this proves that fridges can be moved from the front or if the pipework is not that rigid or both.
Just my two pennorth, probably neither use nor ornament.

I consider you to be extremely ornamental, Julie, but don't tell Neil or Wendy.

Hi Hob,

Yes, there is a gas manifold in the cupboard adjoining the fridge but the fridge pipe comes out of the manifold then runs to the back of the cupboard then through a hole into the fridge compartment, so if I disconnect it from the manifold the fridge pipe would still stop the fridge moving forward.

Will it come out if you remove these screws or is it sealed as well?

Have you looked underneath for an access hatch?

Yes, problem is they are very small and rusted solid so it looks like I will have to drill the heads off and "persuade" it over the stubs remaining which, hopefully, the mole grips will get out. There is sealant but it doesn't appear to be in very good condition so should be easy enough to break the seal once the screw heads are off.

Then it's just a question of sealing and re-screwing with ss screws afterwards but it just seems to be a real palava for what should be annual maintenance access.

Pretty sure there is no access from underneath, you can see through the mosquito net and it appears solid but I shall check 👍

I've had the fridge out of my Triton and it was relatively easy. Your fridge looks similar. The only reason to take off the external vents was to disconnect the flue.
I then took off the two control knobs and then the facia.
With the fridge door open there are 4 plastic plugs, two each side, remove the caps with a thin blade and then behind was a pozidrive screw which screwed in to the wood work either side of the fridge. The fridge could then be gently eased forward by rocking up and down until the gas connection at the top left hand was exposed. There was enough give in the copper pipe to allow this movement. Once the gas pipe was disconnected up there, the fridge could be slid out further to disconnect the 230Vac and 12Vdc supplies on the top right. After that the fridge comes all the way out.
That's how mine works, yours may be similar.

I thought I had already replied to this but I can't see my message now.
I've got a 1997 Eriba Car and the access to the rear is definitely through the ventilation grills; I've recently cleaned the gas burner on ours which wasn't lighting. There was a considerable amount of dust and rust on the burner which I vacuumed off and repositioned the piezo electrode. It works first time every time now.
My ventilation grills look different; There is a sub-frame fastened to the bodywork and an "outer" grill secured by a quarter-turn slotted screw. The outer grill comes off complete with mesh screen and allows access to the burner and the chimney.
I haven't had to deal with the 12V part of the fridge so I can't help with that.
I wonder if you can replace your vent grills with the later type once you've got the old ones off ?
Good luck
