A frame cycle carrier

We have a Thule Caravan Smart cycle rack fitted to the a frame of our Troll 540 - fitted by Adventure Leisure Vehicles. We're off to the Netherlands, and we were having a wee practice with the two bikes, and the instruction manual, this afternoon. We've also had a look on line to get tips for the rack's use. So - we're now looking for clarity on the following!
* how do you stop the pedal of the rear bike damaging the front of your caravan?
* do you need to use the clamp arms on both the bikes? This is extremely difficult, and we've seen some suggestion that only one bike needs to be fixed in this way, with the other one being strapped securely to the first. Any definitive information?
We found ourselves skulking around a Belgian campervan in our local Sainsbury's, trying to see how they had fixed their cycles!

It's quite a simple job to remove the pedal with the right sized spanner to stop it damaging the caravan.

Is this thread of any use (post #9 in particular)?
