Rubber sticking out from awning rail

Hi,

I purchased a troll 540 GT last week 2005. Generally very good condition, I just wanted some advice on how to fix a sight snag to the awning rail rubber (see attached). If i loosen it to tuck the rubber back in, will I need to re-do the mastic? I might be better waiting until next service?

Thanks,

Andrew.

As the awning rail's primary function is to bridge the gap between the van's roof and sides I'd recommend it's repaired sooner rather than later, Andrew.

Remove the Herzim strip to gain access to the rail's fixing screws then remove three or four screws either side of the joint, apply a non-setting butyl mastic sealant (something like this) under the sealing strip and into the screw holes.

Screw it all back together - job done

and Ribski like this post!

Non setting, that's useful to know. Sounds straight forward. I'll sort it over the weekend.

Cheers

It would help to find the ends, though you can winkle it out with a small blunt screwdriver if you're careful. Try not to stretch it. The ends will almost certainly be hidden under one of the awning brackets. It pulls out - and goes back in - quite easily, but if you feel the need to replace it with nice new stuff, Jandi sell it at 50p a metre.

The stuff they sell is the original infill strip as fitted at the factory. Herzim does the same job, but isn't quite the same profile and may not be quite as easy to put in. The OEM stuff zips in really quickly once you get the knack, and there's no real need to warm it up first.

It's a doddle to do, and smartens up the outside no end.

I'm sure Pete's right, but if you don't find the ends under the nearest awning bracket you could make another join there anyway.

I was just working on the assumption that it did indeed have ends and that the join hadn't healed over or anything.
