wheels off

Hi,

so we need to change the tyres and give the wheels some tlc. can someone provide some useful advice for taking both wheels off at the same time.

in my mind i jack up each side (at the jacking point), chock the jockey wheel to avoid movement and put some axle stands under the chassis frame to stop the van tipping/dropping.

wheels will need to be off for a few days so the van will need to be supported at the jacking points and propped up with axle stands!

does that sound about right??

cheers

My vans have always spent the winter on axle stands. I use a trolley jack one side at a time on the axle and slide under the axle stands. I usually move a few things around inside first so van wants to balance, ie no nose weight. The lovely Mrs eribaMotters then keeps a steadying hand whilst I jacking the van.
You should find you can do similar.

If it were me I would

1 slacken all wheel bolts
2 jack up one side at a time and put an axle stand under the axle close to the wheel.
3 lower the steadies until they touch the ground (remember they are steadies not jacks) So not too tightly down the natural nose weight will stop it tipping while you lower them.
4 remove the wheels.

Do on solid level ground if at all possible if not stand axle stands on thick plywood to stop them sinking in and put pads under steadies.

The axle stands should hold it up and the steadies should stop it rocking, as the jockey wheel swivels you might have trouble chocking it, but I would leave it touching the ground as an extra steady.

The safety stuff

Do not go in the van while on axle stands.
Do not under any circumstances go under the van while on axle stands.

Don't forget that once the handbrake is on, push the van backwards to ensure the overrun brake clicks back to its full extent before jacking up.
