Strange Hole

I have just discovered this hole in the wall of my Triton 420. It is in the washroom in the wall opposite the basin and is about 17cm square. Inside the hole is a small compartment. I assume this is original but what is suppose to be covering the raw edges?

Alan,
it is original and according to the photo I have found on the AL site of your van, same age and model it should have a door. This was the case with the same storage area on on 552 some years ago and as far as I'm aware other vans with this facility.
Where did you but the van from?

Your picture shows the same washroom as mine and I do have the door shown. However, the hole I am referring to is above that at about shoulder height.
I bought the van privately but it was originally supplied by Automotive Leisure.

Alan,
sounds like it accessing the hidden area at the of the overhead lockers above the kitchen sink area.
On my 340 I have two cubby holes at the front of the van and one into the side of the toilet area. These are finished with a white plastic trim that is made of two frames that push together and click into place. I am guessing you should have something similar.
You should be able to see what I mean in these photos.
