Registration plate fixing

Hi All,
I’ve just bought our first Eriba, and am going to fix my new number plate to it.
I’m not overly keen on the idea of fixing by means of sticky pads, but it doesn’t seem a good idea to go drilling holes in it either.
I’d be very grateful for thoughts on this.
Apologies for this being similar to another thread, but there were hardly any definitive replies. One most interesting one was that one person had fixed with sticky pads, which fell off after a couple of months.
Thanks,
Russ

Hi Russ. Doesn't the back end of your 2006 Triton look like this?

I don't know as we have an older model but isn't the number plate surround a separate component to the actual bodywork of the van? If so couldn't you drill and fix one of these using short self tappers?

Russ,
I have used adhesive pads to fix number plates to trailers, trailer tents and vans for over 20 years. When I have had to remove a number plate it has been an absolute sod of a job to do so. Nome have ever fallen off or worked loose.
I have not used the little packs that you buy from car accessory shops, but the double sided foam glaziers tape used for fixing double glazed windows. This is available on a roll in various witdths and thicknesses. I believe mine was 12 x 3 mm. Four strips of this about 100mm long is all you need. One at each end and two spaced evenly along the length running top to bottom. This is the stuff,, but you could try a local glaziers as well. I'd go along with what Colin says. Glazier's tape is a good shout, though the green double-sided number plate tape you get from Halfords will do fine too. I've used it on various cars (and two caravans) over the years and I've neither lost a plate nor had one come loose. I've got pressed metal number plates held on with some at the moment, and they're on so firmly that you'd have to peel the car off the plate.

If you do cock it up and don't get it straight, pulling a length of dental floss along behind the plate will get it off again in a jiffy. Meths or white spirit should remove any residue that you can't peel off with your fingers.

Hi,I have two tow cars and have two number plates for the Eriba
The plates are secured on the Eriba with velcro, two years on no problems. Same plates being used for trailer & bike rack.

Hi again Randa,
Yes that’s our van. I hadn’t realised it was a separate number plate holder. It’s all snugly wrapped up in its new cover. When we get a dry day, I’ll get in there and take a proper look.
Thanks,
Russ

This is interesting, how have you fixed the Velcro to the van?

Double sided tape from any car accessory place gets my vote. When we got our new to us Troll the number plate was stuck on with those little tabs that they sell for sticking on plates. As some of you (Hob) will know the plate fell off within a few weeks at the Summer Meet. Stuck it on when we got home with the double sided tape, I think there's more chance of the back end of the Eriba falling off now than the number plate.

Thanks for the reply Julie.
I’m going to take a look at the plate housing when the weather improves. If I think it’s safe to screw it, that would be my preferred method. Failing that, I’ll use some of the double glazing unit tape, as suggested above.

Russ

Same here.

The velcro is sticky backed and sticks really well to the plastic plate and surround.
