He wanted a front dinette....

...he got a front dinette! After much discussion and deliberation, we have gone for a Troll 535 and ordered one. The addition of the front dinette on the 540 over our Triton 420 wasn't enough for me personally to want to change, but the kitchen layout on the 535 is so much nicer and you don't have to practically kneel on the floor to get stuff out of the fridge, which is also bigger. Lovely big deep drawers under the sink/hob and room for a microwave/oven above he fridge opposite. We took our shoes off and laid out together several times on the sideways bed in the 535 at the NEC today (to raised eyebrows) and it convinced us to give up the long beds for a much better layout, for us anyway. Added a factory fitted wind out awning and upgraded the upholstery fabric to match Boris.

I never have to hear the words...."now, if only we had a front dinette" again

So have you decided who will be sleeping window side and having to crawl over their bed partner when going for middle of the night tinkles? I was the one being trampled on at 2am during our Triton 430 days until deciding enough was enough and opting for the Troll 542. I do like the split wardrobe though and being prompted by your post to take a look at the 535 layout have decided to remove the top shelf and fix a hanging rail further up inside. The current shelf with underneath attached rail is pretty useless as there's not even enough height to hang a Polo shirt without the bottom third being crammed in. Wishing you happy days with the new van.

Sounds nice Lesley and it's interesting that the sideways bed fits OK, as you're both tall people. It's probably that extra 100mm on Trolls that makes the difference.

If the climbing over for a midnight wee does get to you then Simon can always change places with Boris

Well Roger, I don't think there wll be any changing of places.......we will probably both be in the 'dog house' so Boris will just have to share his space .....up front in the newley accquired dinette!

Bryn, a bit of insomnia, probably too much wine last night....or not enough!

Roger, I could never sleep across in a Triton but the extra 6 inches on the width of the troll makes all the difference. People thought we were mad at the show yesterday with our shoes off turning about all over the bed but I was really surprised. We sleep in a super king sized bed at home but we found the bed in the 535 fine and well worth the sacrifice for the extra floor and cupboard space. We are not having a fixed bed and Boris will be up the front!

Deeps, his lordship will be on the inside as I never get up in the night ....but remember, we had years sleeping actually in the pop top in our VW T5. If he got up in the night in there, I would have to pin myself sideways to the outside wall for him to have any hope of getting out, and then do the same when he came back, so the 535 will be no problem!

Roger's right, you could always have the dog in with you and I'll have the front dinette! 😀

Should have got a 540.......all possible combinations of dog, spouse, singles, doubles and space!

No seriously!

That's what we do with our 530, minus the dog. Plenty of room to streeeetch out. Bliss.

Mr Parnell....being serious?

But on a serious note...... BY accepting that it is possible for her to sleep across the van, means that the space saved from the length of the 540's long beds means that the front dinette becomes more spacious than that which is on offer in the 540s! This is not demonstrated on the sketch layouts supplied by Hymer in their descriptions! As they say, swings and roundabouts.

It is a good job that we went to look at the vans and the combinations at the show. Just changing to a 540 to add a dinette would not have worked for us. As I understand it, it is only the 2018 models of the 535 that now have the double dinette option. It is the ability to be able to seat 4 in the rear dinette and have the additional space in the front dinette with the reconfigured kitchen lay out and cupboards, is what works for us. The addition of a larger fridge is a plus though we accept that it only works of electric (battery or mains), but as we never seem to be any where without EHU this is not a problem for us.

The other plus in my book is the fact that the rear dinette conversion into the double bed is not as tedious as the long beds in our current 420. It use a simple system of two poles that slip in places and the cushions that slide into place are already braced on the underside. The rear dinette table slips nicely on to the floor under the bed. No struggling in and out of the van with that cumbersome 420 stand alone table to put it somewhere, when using the beds. But as we all know in this game everything is compromise….Blueyonder and I believe that for us the 535 provides the best options for our needs.

Simon,
just a thought on the two poles used for making up the double bed at the rear. If these are the thin walled aluminium tube used on other eribas then they are prone to bending a bit. I avoided this on my Familia with a plywood packer between pole and bed base, and as an alternative sourced a length of galvanised gas barrel for a fellow owner to use as a substitute for the aluminium tube.

You are right about going to look at all the options. In the end whatever you choose will be a compromise and chosen according to how you are going to use the van. And of course one's needs can change. We are seriously considering changing from the 530 to a 540. I like the double dinette at the front. The single dinette looks squished. I would miss the wider wardrobe with the useful little shelves at the side for shoes. The cubby hole and shelf by the door has also been useful but if we are to continue Eribaing we will have to consider mobility and the long beds might well prove easier. AL will do a conversion on the big table, making it smaller and turning it into one that fits onto the end cupboard and also the channel outside. BTW why are the long beds in the your420 tedious? The ones in the 540 we looked at in AL seemed easier that the 530 poles. Have you gone for the 60th edition colour scheme?
