Hot water

OK two quick questions - just so I keep informed!

1. If you have one of those new gas/electric water heaters where does it have to be situated, does it take up much room and do you have to have an on-board tank or will it work off an outside supply such as from an aquaroll? (Is one worth having?) (Yes, sorry that's 4 questions in one!)

2. I keep reading how wonderful Super kettles are but I can't find a website that sells them. Anyone got a link please?

Thanks.

I can't help with the first question I'm afraid (though we do have an older model Truma water heater in our Troll, and that gets its supply from an Aquaroll), and as far as the second question is concerned, I seem to remember reading somewhere (probably on the jolly exciting UKCampsite chat) that the Superkettle outfit had gone kaput.

It's probably because to make a brew you had to have a supermug and superteabags, which are hard to find.

All new 535's come with a combined gas water and space heater, that has an integral 10 litre tank for hot water. This is under the front seat next to the bathroom. There is also a 30 litre tank for cold water housed elsewhere. Automotive Leisure show this on their options list for other vans at £940 for dual fuel gas and electric. However, Cameron told me ours was gas only! He's gone away to ask Hymer as we want the dual fuel. If this costs us more I will be well miffed!

I believe the location of the heater is model specific and it would be best to check with AL, Lowdhams, Jandi as to location on your choice of van. It must have either a 30L tank to feed it or external Aquaroll tank.
Hot water or not is as you know a point that separates owners. We have had the facility along with onboard tank on three of our vans, with only our first lacking the facility. The onboard tank is doddle and keeps water cool in summer, is easy to fill from outside and you don't have to worry about where to store the Aquaroll when traveling. We would not be without it and find the space taken up by both tank and heater is little more than the two jerry can style water containers If going this route I would advise you to think whether you need the gas facility, as it would only really come into it's own when wild camping.
Supper kettles are highly thought of, but if going this route also consider a Swan tea urn. We used one of these when we had a trailer tent.It has a footprint little bigger than a large saucepan and ours had two elements, one to heat up and the other then switched in to hold the temperature.

The built in water heater is though so much better.

Without wishing to dig up this old chestnut again, why is where you store an Aquaroll such a vexatious issue? They don't weigh much, and will fit either in the bathroom on the floor or under the front table (if you've got one). Ours travels there, held in by a bungee.

And it isn't in the way; there's nobody travelling in the van to fall over it, and it's the last thing in and the first thing out.

This is the heating/hot water unit which is standard on the 535, as is the 30 litre water tank https://www.truma.com/uk/en/products/tru...ma-combi-4.html We want the Combi 4E with the built in electric elements as we are never off grid thesedays. Unlike the Truma fires, these elements can't be installed retrospectively, well, I don't think they can, as they are inside the internal tank (bet if you could do it yourself it would invalidate the warranty!). So, we need it to be the right one at the factory. AL have yet to come back to me. The 535 now has no fire, so you get back the storage this heater takes (which is how they got the bigger fridge in).

Re the water tank, to be honest, the more space we are given, the more stuff we pack! Our longest trip in an Eriba to date was 4 months and we still returned with stuff not touched. I am not going to faff about with an aquaroll to give me extra space to just put stuff we never end up using. We have never had any water at all inside before but we take a 10 litre watering can to pour over Boris when he gets dirty. For the new van and its 30 litre tank, I would walk once to the tap with an aquarol to avoid having it and three times with the watering can to have it on board ready. The taps are usually just feet away, so for us it's not worth the hassle (but with our choice of van we get it whether we want it or not!).

Pepe,
it is not a vexatious issue, just a different opinion to your own.
Surely more than one opinion is always better as other forum members can get a more balanced view.

Just more complex gizmos to go wrong ? I thought we bought Eribas to be retro simplistic ?

The problem is that some are more simplistic than others. 😁
