Car accidents in Private car parks.

I don't know if it's a Nationwide Policy but the South Wales Police are not interested and will not attend.
Our daughter-in-Law with a toddler and a baby on board had the rear of her car run into while driving in an out of town shopping centre car park. Some damage to her big lump of a car and evidently a lot more damage to the offender's car. She presumed the other car which was nearly new was not being driven by a tearaway. She and the kids were obviously shocked.
When she got out of the car, the offender reversed back and drove off. She got the number and two witnesses filmed the event on their cameras.
However she and I have been told separately by the South Wales Police that they are not interested and to contact our insurance company.
Nice to know. Why do we bother?

But the Police would have been out like a shot if there was an opportunity to do some serious virtue signalling - like painting their cars in rainbow colours, wearing high heels, painting their fingernails blue or bumping and grinding with carnival or gay-pride marchers.
Sadly, modern policing in the UK is a joke and they have lost a lot of the respect the public once had for them.

Randa,
29 years ago I was t-boned at a set of traffic lights with a pregnant wife when somebody jumped a red light. The police were called, turned up and then went away.
Your daughter-in-law was unlucky/lucky that nobody was injured. I believe then they would have been obliged to attend if somebody was injured.

yes you are correct if no-one is injured they are not interested as I found out following a 3 car pile up on a blind bend, the police were actually on the scene as there had been a previous accident following which they were trying to control the traffic, which lead to the accident I was involved in

Motters and Old Rocker are both correct. Police will automatically attend an RTC if an ambulance has been called for. It's the only time they are interested.
Our youngest daughter was involved in an incident earlier this year. 3 car shunt, she was the one in the middle, her car written off, but no-one was hurt much beyond bumps and bruises.. The police attended long enough to get the drivers to move their cars out of the way of the traffic and then left. Daughter (on her own) finally made it home 3 hours after the accident, badly shaken and totally ignored by the police.
Makes you wonder what we pay for sometimes, I thought their role was to assist the public as well as catch criminals.

This is the result of a Nissan driver NOT stopping at the give-way markings upon exiting a garden centre. We'd driven almost 3,000km on a month long tour around England and this was the last full day of the holiday. Fortunately the initial side impact was slightly to the front of the rear door not affecting the rear axle/wheel so that we were able to continue our journey to the Channel Tunnel the following morning.
A Police vehicle passed by less than a minute later and wouldn't even have stopped if my wife hadn't jumped out into the middle of the road. The following conversation was a revelation to say the least but in essence it went 'nobody injured the insurance companies will have to sort it out'. Not a brushed eyelash was raised (yes, two women PC's in the car) when it was pointed out that having no Police report following our return to Germany might cause problems which of course it did as Police not attending RTA's is unheard of here. Luckily the Nissan driver accepted liability which, because of the dozens of accompanying photographs I submitted to the insurance company, was indisputable.

Would the police be more interested if the same damage was inflicted by a youth with a hammer rather than a motor car? Also, if you'd said you had had a drink or two, they'd be round like a shot!

I would have thought if the offender had reversed and driven off without exchanging details then it is an offence or used to be in my day. Hit and run and failing to report an accident comes to mind !

I thought the "failing to report/driving off" applies only to the public highway. The interesting area regards public house car parks. I once heard that if the issue happened out of licensing hours then it is not a police matter. If it happened during licensing hours then it is a police matter. I think this came about due to a query regarding drink driving, as it was/is not an offence to be in charge of a vehicle whilst under the influence if on private land.

Theoretically you should have an easier job persuading the Old Bill that you had no intention of driving your own car off your driveway while blootered than persuading him (or her) that you had no intention of driving out of the pub car park in the same state.
Mind you, putting yourself in that position in the first place is probably not the smartest of ideas.

I may be wrong but I understood that any land to which the public has access is deemed to be "public highway". Certainly when I worked at a dealers who had a petrol forecourt we were told that that was "public". Therefore you would assume car parks would be "public".

If all car parks were technically public highway (including supermarket car parks, presumably, since the public has access to them), then it would be an offence to leave the scene of an accident, just as it is on the road.
One of the snags (and we've got experience of this) is that a third party leaving the scene of an RTA - and therefore committing an offence - doesn't automatically mean that the police get involved. Clearly it should, but it doesn't.
You can insist that they get involved, but often (as was the case with us) it just isn't worth all the ballache.
It's a bit of a sad state of affairs, but, to be honest, if I was allocating the scant police resources and had to choose between cautioning some feckless git who buggered off after reversing into the front of our car at walking pace and arresting someone who beat up an old dear for her life savings, I know which I'd choose.
Doesn't make it right, of course...
