Saving for Morrison

I was reading Taffy's post about the things he's buying. He writes: "I have bought the caravan cleaner so back there tomorrow to pick up the cover. All I need now is the caravan! Due to collect in May. Next is the hitch lick and wheel clamp." It made me smile.

When we bought Morrison last autumn we went way over our budget - a budget that was meant to have included (but in the end didnt) extras like wheel clamp, insurance, winter cover etc. I reckon we've spent easily another £1500 on top of that, so I'm starting a new savings account for Morrison to cover all those little bits and bobs we might want to buy for him. A bit like having a child again! How do others cope with the expense of a pet caravan?

We just spend - within reason, but we did come after tenting, then two different camprvans to caravans, so we had a fair bit of stuff, but thinking back it;s been a substantial spend.
A couple of friends couldn't wai to tell us last night -
She - whispered we have bought something new.
Me - What?
She - It's got wheels
Me- new shopping trolley
Lots of laughs
She - a campervan
Me - what type?
She - Romahome.........End of fun chat but we went on to talk lots of details of stuff like, gas, electric, leisure battery, bedding, storage etc etc as you do.
They collect today. They have trekked all over the world Nepal, Peru... and used to wild tenting so well equipped for camping, it will just be a different outlook taking everything.

we came over from tenting as well, so had the pots, crocks, and pegs and gas and chairs,
our main purchases in first year were
eriba
tow bar alko ball
electric hook up wire,
waste water container already had a fire bucket
water filter jug, due to finding a site with yukky water,
some led bulbs,

the on going yearly costs,
the insurance and servicing / related items.
club costs
the tyres every 5 years depending on health of user
gas when we run out
polish

it all adds up.. I think we spend more on servicing and insurance then touring fees, food, and activities and fuel,
perhaps save due to rallying and joining in the ccc meets...

very exciting a Roma home it be the bees knees after wild tenting, we wish them luck and endless adventures...
P

good grief its snowing again

As someone once said on one of these forums "caravans are an expensive way to have a cheap holiday". If you put all of your costs on a spreadsheet and then looked at your cost per night you might have a shock. We are sadly selling our little Eriba as we do not anticipate using it enough to justify the £400 per year it costs before it even leaves the drive - servicing , insurance, club memberships. That said owning an Eriba is as much an affair of the heart as the head and we may well get another one in a few years time. Maybe one day we will own a Troll and tour Europe for weeks on end like "Welsh Royalty" :)
