Have I got a damp problem

Hi All,
I have a 2003 Eriba Triton 420 GT and it is my first Eriba, but not my first caravan. I have two bulges on the inner walls. One on either side of the caravan.

One between the wardrobe and window and one between side kitchen unit and window , both just under the overhead lockers. There are No signs of damp, ie water mark or mold in the upper or lower lockers, which is puzzling or maybe it has just started. ????

Both bulges are hand size. When depressed in they spring back. the inner wall boards do not have a soggy feel nor does the surface underneath feel soft when pressed back into its original position.

I am aware Eriba caravans are constructed differently to other types of caravan but feel this is still a damp problem. Can the inner wall become separated with age.???

Usual suspects are window seals and awning rail. Had good look , but no obvious signs of any problem re brittle seals, missing sealant etc.

Had the van only two months and it came with a damp test certificate of 15% and was serviced.

Hoping the collective knowledge of the forum can advise so I am on a firm footing when confronting caravan dealer.

Regards Wardy

Hi wardy, it may be worth buying a damp detector as peace of mind, if it's ok maybe you could use a syringe like on a ink jet refill to put some contact glue behind it.

Hi Poptop,
Thank you for the advice. Borrowed one from a builder neighbor and tried it out. Reading off 11% when placed on the offending bubble. So not damp at the moment. Testing the rest of van tonight.

Talked to Jandi and Automotive leisure and got some sound advice. ( both really helpful and do themselves great credit)

Going to hose pipe it this weekend and see if % rises. Then take out decorative strip from awning rail and tighten screws. Dry out and hose again. Test again.

That's the quick fix.( I should be so lucky). If that fails, re seal awning strip completely. If that is not the cure onto window seals.!!!

I was hoping someone has had a similar problem without their being water ingress, and could therefore allay my worst fears. Found a service bill 2 months (July) prior to my purchase and there was no fault re damp.

It was intimated that the inner board could possibly de-laminate due to condensation, but a definitive answer could not be made without a viewing.

As previously stated at present no sign of any water ingress , indeed you need to have light source at right angles to the wall to see the bulge. only found it by having to place a steadying hand on the inner wall.

Once solved will try your syringe idea.

Regards Wardy
