What Is The Lifespan Of An EHU Cable? is it a predetermined number of years,
or when it starts cracking and crazing.

Dunno mate but we've had one of ours for 12 years now and it's still going strong and in regular use.

I sincerely hope the cracking and crazing criteria do not apply to human lifespans!

Until such time as the CC/CC&C insist that you present an annual test certificate upon entry to the site, if they don't already that is. On some sites in Germany they already do this so don't be surprised if it becomes EU law sometime in the not too distant future.

The obvious things are run it through your hands looking and feeling for cuts or cracking.
(Without it being plugged into the mains!!)
Cuts in the outer casing will allow water to creep in through capillary action, as well as
exposing the conductors to wear and the possibility of electric shock.

And be sure to disconnect at the supply end before disconnecting from the caravan.

The Caravan Club insist that the lifespan of an EHU cable is one year for every two metres of length.

After that you are urged to throw it away irrespective of condition, and buy a new one from one of their list of approved EHU cable suppliers.

It's similar to their recommendation for caravan tyres. Once they get past five years from the date on the sidewall, they must be replaced the same day, again irrespective of wear or condition.

This is, of course, of no benefit whatsoever to the tyre industry, supply chain or fitting network, so you can stop thinking those cynical thoughts immediately and be grateful that both the Club and Sir Granville Grenville have your best interests at heart.

Irrespective of wear or condition.
