Model width?
Am I correct in recalling that our '01 and '05 Troll 540's of the past were the same width as Tritons, both past and present?
I can remember using the front dinette to sleep on at times and don't think I had a problem with the bed length, which is odd as the specs day a Triton bed is 1.88m, which in English money is just 6ft 1.9ins. Usually I need at least 6ft 3ins to be comfortable and the longer bed, the better, being 6ft 1.5ins tall.

You are correct. Non 55 series Trolls up to 2010 were 2m exterior width, the same as pre and post 2010 Familias and Tritons.
55 series Trolls have I believe always been 2.1m exterior width. All Trolls post 2010 are 2.1m exterior width.

Thanks for confirming Colin.
So if I used to be able to manage sleeping across our Trolls then I should be OK sleeping across a Triton, fore or aft.
A Triton gets over the towing limit issue as most are 1200kg or below.
A 430 does pose two issues compared to a 540 though. One is that in making up any of the beds we'd lose floorspace for the dogs, though usually they'd have the space under the front table for one of them anyway. as that would rarely be used as a bed. And ever since we had a transverse fixed double bed in a motorhome Mrs SDA has been dead against having to climb over, or be climbed over for bed access etc.
Just wondering if changing the search to a 430 would improve the chances of finding a van?

‘Our’ 540 was 2 metres wide.
The extra 10 cm on its replacement caused a bit of a problem of entering its parking place!
I had to remove some of the house with an angle grinder🤫

I think the only way to see if it will increase your chances is to look what is up for sale across sites at the moment. I'd have thought there would not be a lot in it, although I do recall some owners searching a long time for a 540.

I would have thought you would need more room as our 2001 430 was a bit snug for me at 5 10ins and we also had the issue of climbing over if needing a night time comfort visit !
We went to a 420 for long singles/big double option but missed having somewhere to sit once bed made up (front dinette) so ended up with what we have now Troll 540.

That's the rub though Mike.
540's for sale seem thin on the ground and Mrs SDA doesn't like the front kitchen on the 420, plus nowhere to sit when the bed's made up. I'd prefer a newer taller van to save cracking my head every now and then, but the taller/wider post 2010 Trolls are 1300kg and the car will only pull 1200kg.
So we go back full circle to a Triton which is the same width as the two Trolls we've had in the past and a 430 provides another seating spot.

I wanted to go back to a 420 but the domestic authority stepped inside and noticed straight away that the overhead lockers above the kitchen were positioned much nearer her head. I could not get to look over the worktop as the locker fronts prevented it. This was not the case on the earlier model.
Otherwise I still think it’s the perfect 2 person Eriba (not with 2 dogs though!).

That's what we noticed on the 420 at Tebay.
Even 5ft 2ins small Mrs SDA said the lockers above the kitchen were in the way. Makes you wonder why they haven't been slimmed a bit.

It depends how you use your van I guess. We have loved our 420 and will have spent almost a year in it out of the past four years. The front kitchen has never really been an issue, as we generally prefer to cook outside or in the awning, even when its cold, to keep cooking smells and condensation out of the van. At 6' 1", I cook in the van when necessary, but I'm not sure I will be any more inclined to cook inside our new Troll. However, him indoors likes to get up early, and wants somewhere to be able to sit with a coffee first thing in the morning. Also, not having to unmake/make the double bed (we don't like singles) all the time will be nice.

That's exactly what we think about our Troll. Although if the 420 hadn't been written off in the accident we would no doubt still have it. No layout is 100% perfect in my opinion, it's just a matter of finding the one that comes closest to your needs.
