Ain't going nowhere...

...what do I care.

Well, to be honest, quite a lot. Driving to a birthday party last night the Landrover Defender gearbox retired from active duty and left Liz and me stranded just as we were about to enter the M25 at junction 6. No Defender means no Eriba as LIz's Fiat 500 can't manage the Triton, so no touring for a bit and a large bill for the Landy.

Just thought I'd share my misery with you

Alan.

PS. Could have been worse, another 100 yards and we would have been on the M25

Thank you Islay. We are booked for the Dorset meet, our first Eribafolk event, and would hate to miss it.

Are Defenders actually allowed on the M25? (Ducks and dons tin helmet)

Keep the tin hat on SDA, I'm coming to get you, or I will be when I'm mobile again.

Has she had a hard life Alan? I always considered Land Rovers to be bomb proof. Our first one rusted away after many years in the Army and our second one had about 150,000 on the clock when it was moved on.

Alan, sorry to hear that.Is it definitely the gearbox? Not just half shafts? You can get a "used" box for about £400 I think. My 110 300 TDI had a recon box a few years ago cost aprox £600 at a local (not cheap) garage. Hope you get get sorted soon.

Thanks for the words of sympathy guys.

Roger, only 24,000 miles, and only towed the van for 500 of those.

Finwoody, I believe it is output shaft failure which seems to be a fairly common fault with Defenders. Won't know for sure until the garage has a look.

Had the Defender trailered to a gearbox specialist this morning. Received a phone call 10 minutes ago, job done, car ready for collection. It was the output shaft (whatever that is). Collecting car tomorrow morning. Dorset here we come .

Now, where's that SDA?
